Good point Barry, but if you're going to delve into the DNA of rock music here, and especially with regard to the great Mr.Clapton, I'd say HIS DNA musical roots are much more american than british. As I recall, the Mississippi Delta is in the Good Ol' U.S.of A., and not in Ol' Blighty.

Exactly my point counseler when I said,
Quote:

The genetic link that connects rock music -Brit or American - to all other music life forms, past, present and future

The answer was only EC because he's a Brit (and IMHO, the best of the best). As you alude, all the music of the topical genre came from this side of the pond - except one might go a step further and say it actually came from Africa if anyone wants the complete genetic line. However, in regard to R&R, R&B, Blues and how it relates to successful Brit performers - The origin was indeed here with the likes of Muddy Waters and the likes of anyone who played or sang the blues. I will also counter on behalf of the Brits that their interest in the art form by so many outstanding Brit performers is what has kept the artform alive and vibrant. Case-in-point; Had it not been for EC, the Stones, The Who, et al and their masterful useage of the parent music to create their own, I would never have become atuned to the art form in its original state. In short, I stand firm that EC IS the link to PAST, present, and future. I rest.

Oh, don't get me wrong...Clapton IS "God" alright in my book too, Barry!

(but Your Honor, I submit the learned pipedr here opened this door of questioning when he brought into evidence the DNA issue here)

Wow, I was a little worried at the start of this thread, but I am glad to hear my boys get some support. Ofcourse since I sing for a Who tribute band, I am a little biased.

My favorites beyond The Who are, Cream and Led Zeplin and the Beatles.

Blues was always strong in the U.S. The Brits didn't revive it, they moved it into rock and pop music for the white people. Blues, Jazz, Rock n' Roll, Gospel, Bluegrass, and Country all originated in the U.S. These are roots that got filtered into all the popular music for decades. Certainly no reason to think the Yanks were outdone by the Brits or anyone, for that matter.

Getting Blues more into the rock music and exposed to the masses was one the greatest things the Brits did IMHO.

Good points there Bob.
Bluegrass and Appalachian music have Celtic roots, so maybe there is a fuller circle than one might imagine

I think that you're referring to The Righteous Brothers "Rock and Roll Heaven".

My most profound musical memory was whan a school mate bought Black Sabbaths Master Of Reality, and put it on the turntable, and Sweet Leaf came on. Man, that blew me away. Been a Metal Head ever since, 35yrs later...........

Just got around to this thread...

What about "The Moody Blues"? They certainly broke some new ground with Days of Future Past.

Thom I might be wrong, I sometimes am.

Like a lot of these groups, but thought I weigh in on the Jazz genre. Not a lot here but there are some out standing jazz artist from the UK. Peter White, Paul Hardcastle, Down to the bone, Shakatak.
