Went into work today, everything was normal. Everyone was happy, well as happy as you can be at 6am.. I do my normal stuff, and retire to my quaters till I get a call form the boss. Not just "my boss" but the big boss.. I went into his office and was told my services were no longer needed. But it was not only me, there were 3 others that were "let go" today. No ryme or reason, just pack your stuff and beat it.. I am still in shock. I quess I can go back to working 911, but that will take a few weeks to get hired and procesed through.. Man what a bad time for this to happen.. I knew the buy out was gonna really mess things up at work. Now that are 4 medics and who knows how many more out of work. We have a feeling the new owner is closing down one of his other birds and bringing that crew here..
I called a attorney today, but since this is a right to work state, I am pretty much screwed.

That is bad news, there is no loyalty to workers any more. Wish you luck, hope you find something soon.

Hang in there, Brother. It could happen to any of us, given the state of things these days. Sorry that it happened to you.

I hope this turns into a blessing in disguise for you, and you can devote more time to your bike shop. You seem like a pretty resourceful guy, I'm sure you can ride this out. Best of luck, Uncle Charlie

Hey ditch_dr, sorry to hear the bad news. I hope EMT is an "in demand" job in S.C. Get a letter of service from your job. They have to supply it to you. Well, at least in Missouri. It should state your reason for termination - lay-off. Also, your old boss should be willing to give you a glowing recommendation because it's in his best interest for you to get another job asap. If not your old boss, then maybe the HR manager in the organization if he's a friend. Unemployment compensation costs the company money. Post your resume' everywhere, especially on monster.com. Email it to all your friends and let the world know you're available. Who knows, you may come out of this with a raise.

I will bounch back, still in shock tho.. I mean I have a almost spotless recoed with the company. Allways earily to get there, stay late when needed. Cover extra shifts all the time, I even come in on my days off to help out with new hire's.. Just goes to show, if you want a job, create one.
Only wish I have more in savings so I could put 100% of my mind in the new shop..

You're right, bad day! I went through that job before last. It turned out they did me a good turn, the place I retired from was the best job I ever had. This is the reason all the personnel departments were changed to "human resources" some years ago, a resource is something to use up and throw away.

Think of it this way :came there looking for a job, leaving there looking for a job. Don't panic you'll be fine. Meanwhile put some time into the bike shop.

Sorry to hear that mate, a job you enjoyed so much. Hope it all works out for you.
Sometimes we need a push. When our part of Lucas was bought by CSC almost all those who left during that period have far better jobs than they had at Lucas or that CSC could offer. Most of us who stayed to be part of this 'peoples' company were sh*t on big time.
Good luck

REALLY sorry to hear this, Matt. But it sounds like you have a few options open to you at this point.
And Uncle Charlie above took the words right out of my mouth. This could indeed be a "blessing in disguise".

At least you haven't lost your sense of humor sometimes situations like this can get you depressed. Hopefully you will find another job fast and this will all be an unplesant memory. Keep your chin up something will come your way.

Oh, I hated to read that Matt. Once you get the word out you're available you'll be okay, but that doesn't make it suck any less. One thing's for sure, people in your neighborhood aren't going to stop hurting themselves anytime soon so your abilities will always be in demand.

Maybe his new shop slogan ought to be "Bikes and Bikers Repaired, Free Estimates"

Matt, you have better things to do with your time than work for a company that treats employees like that anyway. I never understand how corporate acts like everything is normal one day, then "we don't need your services" the next day. You have other talents, so collect the unemployment for a while and get that shop going. You have the support of your BA.com family. Dave

Same thing here. Unexpectedly laid off ON MY FREAKIN 50TH BIRTHDAY in Oct '05. As luck would have it, 6 weeks later someone picked me up for the exact same salary. And, it turns out to be the best job of my life...
I hope things turn around for you as well, dr. I bet it will...

I know the feeling and am sorry to hear your going through it. Been there myself, twice... and fully expect the axe to fall again due to offshoring of anything related to technical support...
My only advice is stay away from computer companies....

My friend, I feel for you but having been fired from four jobs in my life, I've come to believe that when one door closes, one opens. Don't mire yourself in the argument that you were loyal and good and shouldn't have been fired...the key is that your qualities will bring you to the next opportunity. Tough break, Ditchy, hope it turns out for ya. Does this mean that you'll be posting even MORE on this site?! If so, we'll have ta reserve a special byline category for ya, like, "Ditch diggers do know" or "Ditchy's done did dat", or how about, "Dig ditchs with the digger", etc. I'd read it all! You're one witty dude!

A long time ago I learned that if you are paid for what you "do" rather than being paid for what you "know", you are always in jeopardy. Luckily, I have a skill that is in demand and that not a lot of people are good at. My former partner and I had a falling out at the beginning of the month and I am no longer part of that business. I had a job within three days - for exactly what I wanted. From someone who could not be happier that I was available to work for him. He keeps stopping by my office to ask how things are going and to thank me for coming on board.
Take a hard look at what you "know" and find a way to capitalize on it. Don't be so ready to jump right back into what you "do". Look at how you might be able to do some consulting work or create a position for yourself within a health system or other large organization that deals with your former profession.
Women and cats will do as they please. Men and dogs should just get used to that fact and relax

Ough! Hard hit, brother. Very unfortunate. Been there too, twice. Remember one thing - most times one door has to close before another can open. This looks more like an opportunity than a tragedy.
Good Luck!
