How do I take it apart? I hate the looks of the cheap light up design, and I'm wanting to change it to LED. Being the electrical engineer that I am thats kinda my way of customizing. Just can't get past the pressed in seal. Any help?

yup bad idea. Tech support from Drag Specialties replied back to my question. "They are not made to come apart."

I replaced my DS tach bulb with a LED. I used an instument bulb from Superbrightleds.com . It comes out the back. Twist a quarter turn and it comes right out. If I remember correctly, there is a rubber plug in the back of the tach, pull that out, and the bulb is right behind it. I got a white one, but I guess you could experiment with different colors. I think it was a T1.5 74 base, I'll look for the empty package when I get home. The stock bulb was way too bright at night, the LED is perfect.

Thanks Lonzo that looks like what I'm going to have to do. I'm lookin to do a green backlight since my bike is green. My plan in all this was to put a bunch of mini LED's around the outer circle for a better effect. Doesn't look to promising now.

Could you get a pic for reference to what your tach looks like?

This might not apply but I saw a thread a long time ago about removing moisture from a sealed tach unit and the modder "unrolled" the lower edge of the trim ring to access the interior and then used a curved tool he ground down to burnish it back into place.

I know what it looks like Lonzo I've got the same one in my hands . I was wanting a pic of how the LED looked inside the tach. Can you take a picture of it and post it for me? I really appreciate your research. I think I'm going to go with the Green LED.

Thanks

Hi Ed,

I recall reading that thread too. I searched for it but couldn't find it. Frustrating. Was it on our site or was it on the RAT site? My research did give birth to a tech thread in the tech section though about the installation and wiring. I'll add to it as time passes or as others send me links. Did I just say that? Time to throw a leg over Vera and ride into the sunset...Gotta skip trowel a ceiling tomorrow morn. Then paint and install some floors. No time for riding this weekend. That is one good thing about work, It allows me to ride a little every day! Floriduh. I know what a chad is!

I really need to start saving those web pages as pdfs for later research. I can't find that anywhere now; but, I've also lost Triumphant's web site addy as well so it really isn't surprising. Probably ought to put the search wizard ThomWill on the case.

Was wondering why you wanted a picture of the tach
The LED is a whiter light, not nearly as bright as the stock DS bulb, and its not as diffused. It lights up the face fine, and leaves kind of a shadow in the middle.

Edit- dumped lousy pics, this is from Whitt's instructions. As you can see, the DS tach bulb is much brighter than the Speedo bulb, assuming his speedo is also lit. The LED light looks just like his pic, but not nearly as bright.
