I have been laying in bed since 0645 this am. Went to work and the boss took one look at me, then sent me home. my eyes are literaly black and blue from the pressure in my sinus's, my ears are completley pluged up, and I cant taste anyhting. Even apple juice, that i love so much taste bad. Called my Dr she cant see me untill Friday, debating on going to the ER.

One good thing about this is I get to move into the guest bedroom untill I feel better. Kind of like camping out. Wounder if Jess will notice if I start roasting marshmellows in the fire place lol..

(crackin' jokes about makin' somores when he feels like crap...now THIS is why I like this guy!!!)

Yeah Matt! Maybe a trip to the ER might help. What's the wait at YOUR ER, about 5 hours like it is HERE?!

Well anyway....get well soon, dude!

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

D-Wight,, I am lucky we have a free standing ER less then 2 miles from my house. It is used as a employee health dept for Roper Hospital. Even tho I am do not work for them, I still get to use it. Most of the time the wait is 5 to 10 min unless its the first 3 days of the month, thats when the new hires are having blood work drawn and so on.

Must be nice to have "connections", huh?!

(and here we go into our ER horror stories, folks.....)

About 4 years ago I had a severe kidney stone attack at work. One of my co-workers drove me to the ER near LAX, where the surrounding community is "questionable" at best. I walked in kneeled over in great pain, and was greated with "Fill this form out, and we'll get to you as fast as we can, sir."

Okay?! Well, "as fast as we can" turned out to be those 5 hours I mentioned above, and in those 5 hours two gun-shot victims were wheeled in and 5 Hispanic families with 2 of their 8 kids who had the sniffles were being checked out, I wreathed on the floor of that ER waiting room in tremendous pain, and ended up passing that darn stone myself in those 5 hours right there!

I then walked up to the receptionist and said, "Well, thanks a lot for all your help here!"(I didn't smile when I said that to her, BTW) and walked outside and called work on my cellphone so somebody could come and pick me up.

There is a hospital like that here. Average wait time is like 3 to 4 hours. Some people think that if they call 911 and have a ambulance take them to the ER they get seen faster,,, LOL HOW WRONG THEY ARE.. here let me share a typical encode with you, mind now this is when I was working 911 before I started to fly.

Medic 34 Roper,,,, This is roper medic 34 go ahead.
Goo afternoon Roper medic 34 inbound to your facility with a 25 year of age fmale with a chief complaint of pain in her left great toe due to stubbing it on the dresser. How do you copy?

Copy you 10-2 medic 34 contune

ETA of 10 min pt is stable bleeding has stopped vitals are bp of 124/60 pulse of 78 resp at 18 with no wheezing.
Toe has been bandaged and packaged all bleeding has stopped , pt self ambulated to to medic unit.

Roper medic 34? medic 34 go ahead Roper.
have you started a IV on this patient?
No Roper we do not have IV acess at this time, would you like us to start one?

No medic 34, take patient to triage, Roper out.

Pretty much that means put their butt in a wheel chair and take them to the waiting room, we have sick people here to deal with.

Working in health care informatics. I get to see a large number of ER complaints (patient de-identified). Never ceases to amaze me. Calling them Trauma Centers does not seem to help, either. Lot's of traumatic sniffles out there.

Thom I might be wrong, I sometimes am.

NO kidding, sometimes it seems people just walk by oh a light goes off in their head. Oh wait a ER, hey I should really go get this looked at.. no why wit till i can see a Dr I dont want to bug them.

Oh and I almost forgot, there has been cases of people calling 911 from the ER to be taken to a dirrent hospital beacuse the one they are at is taking ot long.

Speaking of Thom's "patient de-identified" thing here, my wife is off work today so I told her as we left for lunch a little while ago about relaying my above story to you guys. She then reminded me of another kidney stone attack episode I went through just a couple of years before that one.

...Chalk this one up in the "English as a second language" column.....

Same thing...One of those little spiney suckers was cuttin' it's way through that even smaller little tube which connects the kidney to the bladder and evidently has mucho nerve-endings in it.(note to God: BAD DESIGN THERE, DUDE!!!)

Wife drives me to the ER. They admit me in about an hour!(GOOD!)

Wife stays about an hour after that and then leaves for home.(That's cool)

Wife gets home, and takes a nap.(Okay...the lady needs her rest)

Wife wakes up about 2 hours later in kind'a of a groggy state and calls the hospital to see how I'm doing.(What a gal!!!)

After the first two people at said hospital tell her they've never heard of the guy(ME), they finally get a hold of the nurse in the ward I'm in and who HAS heard of me. A little Philippina nurse.(she could tell from her accent)

Wife asks said nurse how I'm doing.

Little Philippina nurse says..."Yes. He in much pain, so we put him to sleep!"

Wife in groggy state no more!

(hand to the afforementioned "Dude" who screwed up his afforementioned kidney to bladder design...this is a true story!!!)

Sinus Buster, it's like this pepper bomb you sniff. Haven't found it yet. I use a homeopathic allergy relief med that works good for me.

I have horrable allergies, I have been on 4 or 5 diffrent allergy meds, but they will work for a few months then stop. I know it is gross, but I dip(snuff) and it keeps me pretty clear most of the time..

If you are looking for a bright side, you can clear out all the stuff in the kitchen that you hate while your taster is out of commission.

Sinus infections can be serious stuff, you should try to get looked at sooner than Friday.

I hate ER's with a passion....
2 years ago, riding the bike, just a few miles from home and "WHAP" some stinging insect nails my neck right below my jaw. It smarted a bit, but I thought nothing of it - I'd been stung before.
I get home, the wife's reading the Sunday paper, and I tell her what happened. I'm feeling a bit itchy and as I scratch I notice lumps beginning to appear beneath my fingernails. HMMM???
I go into the bathroom and look in the mirror to check this out and am surprised to find Joseph Merrick looking back at me...
I go back into the living room and tell the wife "Honey, do I look different to you?"

25 minutes later she has me in the ER of a local hospital. I do the check in thing and get the plastic band around the wrist and take a seat. The waiting room is full of women and children - no one is moaning, no one is groaning, no one is bleeding, no sucking chest wounds, I have no idea why they are there....
But, the women are casting furtive glances at me, the children are staring and either laughing or crying in fear, and I am now itching like I am wearing cactus underwear. My wife looks at my swollen face and tells me to tell the nurse I'm having trouble breathing. I'm not, but she must have read that in a magazine somewhere.. good woman - these are professional people, we don't want to dupe them... as I pat her wrist....

2 and 1/2 hours go by. I have been doing a $1000 lap dance on a plastic chair hoping I could quit breathing but they still don't call my name. Smiling and crying children have come and gone - new ones who weren't there when I came in - and I finally had enough.
My wife saw "that look" in my swollen eyes and became suddenly afraid. I walked up to the window where the admissions nurse sat, and slowly, for effect, pulled out my little pocket knife and sawed the plastic bracelet off of my arm.
I threw it on the desk in front of her and said "Thanks for your help, but I'd rather die at home."

My wife was mortified, but followed me out to the car. We stopped for some benadryl on the way home and I've lived happily ever after....

From a chronic sinus sufferer.....Alkaseltzer Plus for Colds usually opens me back up. Claretin products work pretty well. If I need to open things up right away, a few snorts of Afrin nose spray but use sparingly; its addictive. A little Vicks Salve in each nostril. Also, you can rub the Vicks all over your chest and neck to help with chest congestion. A lady at work has three kids in grade school who are always bringin' something home from school, swears by mucinex for herself and her kids. All or any combination of the above with damp hot rags on your face helps those sinuses open up.

An old deacon in our church swears by a little whiskey with honey and lemon in it but I think its just a good excuse to take a nip.

Man, I hope you get to feeling better real soon. Roast a marsh mellow for the guys in Mississippi

Its more fun to be ridin'! I'm still ridin
