The last several months I have been a little preoccupied with my son, and I don't pay too much attention to things that don't involve my hobbies or family, but today I learned that hollywood has officially run out of ideas. It's like that commercial -"you have reached the end of the internet!" How can I say this you may ask?

Well Stew, I'm guessin' selling the concept of a sequel, an already known entity and proven money-maker in the past, is always going to be an easier sell to Hollywood producers than an idea which has no track-record. And those dudes certainly know how to make the moola...if not necessarily "art".
And thus...Sly Stallone in "RAMBO 5: Steroids Of Menace".(...or whatever the subtitle becomes)

Don't forget the bastardization of one of the last untouched cartoons of my childhood. GI Joe, he will now be an international task force with nothing to do with the US military. Can't wait another couple years and see live action Smurfs

Don't forget...the Speed Racer movie! and isn't there a new Rocky movie? And what about all the crappy remakes of old movies? I mean, come on guys! Isn't there an original screenwriter in Hollywood anymore? Dave

The only good films that stick out in my mind recently are Blood Diamond and Apocalypto. Superb films!
Maybe Hollywood is having a lull... didn't all the writers go on strike recently?

I'll put Blood Diamond on my list. Apocalypto was a great movie. Some parts were tough to watch but very well done. I'm must admit, my favorite scenes were early in the movie when they were screwing with each other. Some things cross all cultural boundries
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Gentleman, Hollywood writers, or the lack thereof of "good ones", is not the problem. The number one priority in Hollywood is exactly the same as it is in Des Moines IA, Chicago IL, Manchester NH, or any other local in these United States....MAKING MONEY!
And because this is "Job One", Hollywood gives the citizens of this country(and the world) exactly what they want! And that usually is some form of mass entertainment that doesn't challenge the intellect of the average moviegoer.
Now, does that kind of explain "Rambo No. Whatever" in the proverbial nutshell or not?!

It's a true story and hits home hard... except for Dicaprio's corny SA accent. Definately one to watch.

Took my son to see Beowulf... another great film based on a Danish folk tale. Ray Winston's freisan/cockney accent didn't quite cut the mustard though. Best sequels/prequels for me where Star Wars... all others give or take a few are crap... maybe not Harry Potter

Because they were designed that way from the beginning. Like the Godfather trilogy and LOTR. (Which BTW, I understand Peter Jackson will be making "The Hobbit" next.)
The movies where they look and say "Hey this made money, lets do a sequel" are the ones that usually suck.

That's not the problem, it's the producer's that decide what gets made and what doesn't. Money talks.

When the moon is in the Southern sky and Jupiter is inline with Mars The Pink Panther talks and Road Runner says not Bleep Bleep . Then Peas will feed the planets . And then will start the Age Of Aquariums .
I stayed up too late again . I watched Doctor Zhivago on TCM . This is the answer to Hollywood's sucking vacuum of creativity - rerun timeless classics .

Speaking of timeless classics.....
The only non-cartoon movie my 4y/o has watched with me was "Cool Hand Luke". Come to think of it - it probably was the drugs.

I spend more and more movie time watching the classics channels. Looking forward to the next Tugboat Anny marathon with Margery Main and Wallace Beery. Even the "special effects" these days sucks. Computer generated cartoonish effects just don't cut it. The average modern movie falls into one of two categories. Comedy made up of 20% sex and 80% of trashtalk, or "serious" with 20% sex, 30% blowing things up and 50% trashtalk. Even Disney films all follow the same formula with a potty joke etc, they have really gone to pot sinc Walt died.

Well, sometimes. G rated and pro American movies usually do much better than R rated and anti American movies but Hollywood seems to want to do the dirty anti US movies instead. Pushing the envelope and making absurd political statements often seem to be their own reward.

Trust me Larry, even Hollywood knows waving Ol' Glory around is always going to be a better bet(box office-wise) than dragging her into the ground.
AND, any and every movie, TV show, novel, newspaper or magazine article which attempts to look objectively at any topic or issue, and which may not put our great country in the best of light is NOT necessarily "anti-american".
(as Ed Murrow would say..."Good Night and Good Luck"...that's it for me here!)

Nah! That's not it for me actually....
Larry, do me big favor will ya, dude?
Every once in a while just make a little self-effacing joke about your beloved "Heartland". If you'll notice, I often do this very thing when the name of California pops up.(yeah, I know, it's probably easier for me, huh?!)
You see, it kind tells me and maybe a few other people that you have a wider vision about things. That you can see some of the absurdities that can take place in your own back yard.(I know there has to be a few of these kinds of things there in Iowa too, right?!)
Oh, and you might also try soft-pedaling "Reaganomics" everytime the word "government" rears it's ugly head around here. Maybe even attempt a subtle but effective joke(and yes, if it's at all possible, self-effacing too) about this very topic.
I've found attempting to "keep it light" will often make a bigger impression upon those to whom you are trying to reach with any message.
And sometimes, believe it or not, I've found some of your messages to be very well conceived, and I've thought it a pity that with that "lighter touch" I mentioned earlier, I wouldn't necessarily find myself attempting to block the more weighty of your thoughts so darn much.
Thank you, Dwight
