It sounded like the Siege of Baghdad around here last night. I have never heard so many guns going off at once. It sounded exactly what I would imagine a war to be like. I have never been in a war, but I would imagine a battle would have to be very intense to sound like what I heard last night. It was a continuous, intense barrage that went on for about half an hour. I kept listening for bullets hitting the house.

I am spending the holidays in Albuquerque. Yesterday the TV stations ran ads and interviews with the local cops pleading for restraint in using firearms to celebrate the New Year. I think the only purpose it served was to remind people to pull their guns out of their hiding places so as to be ready for the stroke of midnight. I am not opposed to firearms per se, but I have never heard anything like that. I was astounded. It definitely would have been dangerous to be outside because of the bullets raining down. I hope my roof doesn't develop leaks from bullet holes. I'm glad our cars were in the garage.

I was here last year too, but I don't remember as much gunfire. I am in a new development on the south side of the city. Last year the houses weren't built out like they are this year, so maybe that is why I heard less. The gunfire was coming from all around; from the new houses immediately around me, and from an older neighborhood a few blocks away. The came from close and far away.

I heard many guns fire off a quick seven rounds, full clips at a time. I don't know what brand of guns those were, but I suspect they must be the semi-auto pistol of choice around here. I'm not up on my semi-autos. I also heard long successions of shots, something with a large clip gun, like an AR-15 maybe? I heard individual booms that sounded like large caliber handguns, 44 mag? Also heard the definite sound of shotguns and a menagerie of other shots.

Has anyone experienced this in your communities? Albuquerque is becoming known for it's gang activity. Drive-by shootings are becoming commonplace. It also has a huge population of immigrants. It's almost frightening to go out. Now I know that almost everyone has guns in this end of town.

Happy New Year
Cody

Shooting straight up in the air is not dangerous except maybe to put out an eye. The bullet falls back down at terminal velocity and doesn't carry enough force to do any harm. You could catch it. Now that is different than firing it in an arch like trejectory where it carries energy from the muzzle velocity. A bullet.like any other object, will only fall at it's terminal velocity no matter the distance it falls due to wind resistance and friction. You won't have any holes in your roof no matter how many rained down on it. Personally I went out and aired out a Saab with my SKS at midnight.

The local news station ran a story yesterday about a little girl who was killed in 2005 here in Albuquerque from catching a falling bullet. They said it went through her head and ended up in her shoulder. They emphasized that it was shot upward into the air. They interviewed the father. Regardless, I don't like it a single bit. Drunks and guns are a stupid, stupid combination. You can bet that not every one of those bullets went straight up. I'll never be convinced that shooting guns, lots of guns, in a densely populated area is a good idea.

I'm sure it was really, really, loud. I definitely believe it was dangerous. But unless there was artillery involved, not quite warlike. I saw the Mythbusters show on "Shooting into the air", and they proved it to be nonlethal if the round goes straight up and down.
It's still a stoopid thing to do if you live in or close to populated areas.

Guns, booze, vehicles, and idiots in posession of all three - That's what makes this the Great Darwinian Winterfest. The problem is that these wankers aren't the only ones that get weeded out. There are a fair number of inocent victims. Don't want to come off as some Temporance Society freak - I party with the masses. I just get troubled when I see the condition some of these rock-for-brain idiots leave the festivities. It has to be the most potentially dangerous night of the year to drive. It amazes me it doesn't end in a auto-induced blood bath. Well, the sermon's over. Have a happy, safe, healthy new year all.

I thought Mythbusters did a show on that and proved that it could be fatal.

I didn't say shooting straight up was a good idea but that falling bullet killing a girl is BS.It is against the laws of physics and impossible. It is like the penny from the Empire State building myth, total BS. Neither one carry enough energy to do any harm except chip the paint or maybe ding your cars finish a little. I agree it is stupid to do in a populated area and I am a firm believer in Know Your Target and whats behind it. That is why I shot up a car and do that every year. 2 years ago the car I had behind the one I was shooting at was a nice Mazda 626 I wanted to sell and it ended up full of holes too.

LOL , Dwight I had no ill will to the Swedish (Volvos are great by the way) Saabs do suck to work on though so I may have had a tad of ill will in that case!It was simply the car I had out back ready for the crusher and in a safe location to blast away at,emptied the clip! I loved it! That rifle was a recent aqusition and haven't had a chance to fire it until last night. Got it new still packed in the cosmoline so I wasn't sure how well it was going to work. I wasn't confident that I had all that mung cleaned out of all the passages, guess I did OK it fired flawlessly.

Glad you survived John.

We have the same thing here near the centers of gang activity.

Fortunately, I live far away from them.

I did hear some gunfire, but it was out in the desert and most likely fired towards the mountains.
