Every now and then I like to post some common maintenance tips to help out new owners. These are some of my favorite tips.

1. Our fuse boxes are prown to corrosion. So I highly recommend removing all fuses and coat fuse box and fuses with dielectric grease (Blub Grease). Do not pack the fuse box with grease. Packing can cause problems blowing the main fuse.

2. Separate as many connectors as possible and coat with dielectric grease.

3. Check to make sure battery terminals are tight.

4. Check screws on chain guard regularly. I use blue Locktite on these screws.

5. Check header bolts regularly and torque to correct spec. The constant heating and cooling tends to loosen them.

6. Inspect vaccum plugs regularly and carry replacements with you. These little buggers seem to crack at the worst times.

7. Use a battery tender in the winter or when bike won't be used for several months.

8. Ride your bike. Letting a bike sit is the worst thing you can do.

Happy New Years

Here's another one, take along some duct tape. You can fix a lot of things including a cracked vacuum cap with it. A length of fuel hose is handy too. I once stuffed some short bits of hose behind the points in my magneto when the points spring broke. Not only got me home but kept the bike running till payday.

Instead of using locktite, I just use my chain wax and spray it on all the threads of anything that is mounted to the bikes frame.

Fishercat,

Happy new year and thanks for the tips. I got the torque specs out and my new 0-35 nM torque wrench and discovered my exhaust manifold bolts to be very loose. I need to get some dielectric grease and do that stuff as well.
