Okay so while I'm getting used to this Forum thing. I need some help finding a good seat that won't leave my tail bone hurting. I've checked out Corbins but I've been told they are too hard. In October I went to the Vintage Racers at Barber Museum in Birmingham, AL and met a guy that had a Corbin with some sort of sheep skin soft cover over the top of the seat. Anyone have any suggestions?

Corbin's are kinda hard, but they have to break in to the rider. That takes about 2000 miles then they fit your butt and are quite comfortable. Sitting on someone else's won't tell you much 'cause it fits their butt. My Corbin only has about 500 miles since I put it on and it's breaking in nicely, supports the tail bone area better too.

I agree with Bill; my tailbone hurt because of the lack of support that stock seats provide. While the Corbin seems harder at the outset, it does a much better job of support and after a few nice rides it really gets good. I do prefer a firmer ride, though, so take that into consideration.

Don't sweat it. Gives the Mods something to do.
(They do get a little testy when they have to set down their beer though )

Thanks for the links guys....I knew it was a sheepskin something or other. I like everything else about the America except the seat. Having Floor boards have helped but nothing like a nice comfy seat for a BIG butt.

If you contact Corbin, they might be able to make you a softer seat. A lot of seatmakers will stuff them differently on request.

If a girl (or guy) is handy with needle and thread, a pretty good imitation sheepskin can be had at most auto outlet stores. My wife cuts them down to the right size (easy) and sticks a thin layer of foam under them and then sews a couple of elastic straps on them. This can be done for about $20. But I'll admit that those factory sheepskin covers look very good. My scrawny lil butt is good for about 400 miles on our cheapie home mades.

Hey Salina, I saved myself a bunch of money by working with a friend to shave off a couple of inches of foam from my stock America seat and then drop in a gel insert into a hollow made in the foam. We did it a bit at a time and custom fit a nice little bucket for my derriere. Perfect and comfy! Initially I re-used the stock seat cover (it's very stretchy) while waiting for my friend to make me a leather cover for the seat....You might be able to find a custom car and MC upholstery shop to do something similar?

Try the Spencer Seat mod on a stock seat. I'm really pleased and it was only 75 bucks plus shippimg!

I've done cosiderable tinkering with the seat & am not really happy with the results. I think Spencer will be my next move.

I posted directions for the gel insert long ago, it works best if finished off with memory foam over the gel. Also best way to cut the foam is with an electric carving knife and only remove a small amount at a time. Easier to keep even and removing a small amount at a time keeps you from cutting too deep.Once its close finish it with a surface prep pad until smooth. same goes for after the foam is done, smooth it out with a surface prep pad. Best to mark the seat covering and pan with a marker to make it easier to line up for re-installation.

Great Idea....I'll have to check around to see what I can find. I owned a 1984 Virago & had a custome seat recovered by this lady locally..I'll have to ask her about doing something like this.

i also had a gel pad installed on my BA, then added an alaska sheepskin, it did help. just received back a russell "day-long" for the FJR, will test this week-end. not much difference in price of "built- for your body" custom, than many after-market seats [and it's high quality leather too,,,looks great]

If you are a distance rider, look into Russ mayer seats.
If you are looking for more short term comfort, look into bead rider.com
"Cruiser" seats and "retro" seats put too much pressure on your low back and tail bone.
my 2 cents

I've got a Rick Mayer saddle - I love it. His Dad, Bill Mayer was the maker of the Russell DayLong Saddle. Bill died a few years ago, but Rick and his brother Rocky are still building some mighty fine seats for all of us. Go ahead and spend the $550-$600 and get the best. If you want long distance comfort, step one is to get your feet directly under your knees or slightly behind.
Ride Safe,
