Are the cams off the speedmaster 790 the same as the America 790 cams..
Also did the early America's have black cylinder heads, as the one I have bought is black, but the guy insists it was off a 2002 America and not a speedmaster

Some of the BB kits have black heads. Think yours has a 904 kit?

No BB kit, that is why I bought the head and barrels, the barrels measure for standard pistons 86mm so I know it's a 790 but the head is black. This makes me think it is off a Speedmaster rather than a America. But the guy insists it was an America. Will have to check the Cams when I split my America and see..

My thoughts entirely Greg, but why would he insist its off an America... just means me swopping my cams over after the BB has been done if there is any difference..

Could be off a standard Bonneville... 270 vs 360 the cams would be completely different.

Its a SWAG, but looks like the 865. 865 cams have 0 overlap which would make them "pointy". Is there a part number on them? I have a shop manual. The stock photo of Thunderbike cams from Brents site look like this
2002 Bandit 1200/ GSXR cams/ 1277 BB Kit/ Holeshot header and can/ 38mm flatslides/ a good head/lotsa hp/lotsa tq- lots of rear tires...

Hard to tell in the pictures but looks to me like it's a 270 as opposed to a 360 degree cam set by looking at the lobes. Can't tell if they are 790 or 865 for sure. At least I can't from the pictures.

From what I can see surely if the lobes from a single cam are pointing in opposite directions [180 degrees] this makes these from a 360 motor...

A little bit deceiving is that picture looking at the bottom cam the lobes to the right are pointing at 4pm while the others are pointing at 11am, if that helps..

Ray, A lot of shops that do the big bore machine work have heads ready to go, some form SM, some from bA. No difference at all ceptin for the black or silver colors. Cams are same too from 2001 to 2005..

I haven't seen the 865 cams, but I would think the exhaust lobes would be a lot closet to being pointy looking than the 790 because of the relatively short duration. If you had one of each to look at, you should be able to easily see the difference.

Come on Pat, this is the UK, you cannot buy anything for our bikes like that off the shelf. Infact some of the engineering shops still use a hammer and chisel.

Thats why I said 270, those lobes don't look straight across to me in the pictures.
