I finally stepped up and replaced my short TOR's with the Epco pipes. I have been impressed with my bike performance after each other modification (AI plugged, 18-tooth sprocket, the Freak system) but the Epcos not only sound awesome, my bike hauls booty!! Highly recommend them.

Don't you just love that sound? Especially when you run the engine up above 4500 or so. ******, think I'll go for a ride!

I've been more than pleased with the sound and performance of Epco exhaust the last two years as well. I don't know if they have changed the materials at all, mine discolored a bit at the header junction, but a little color on the headers and pipes doesn't bother me. Being naturally lazy and indolent I also neglected to apply sealant at the pipe/header connection, but the fit is so tight I can't detect any air leaking using soapy water (isn't that what the gas people do?). I initially waited a few months before removing the AI system. The headers on the 76 T-140 turned into a blue and gold rainbow.

Love mine too.

The ONE thing I wonder about them... If the baffle insert was pushed in towards the front of the pipe, I wonder if it would smooth out the sound at all, ya know?

Probably not. The more expansion area on the inner side of the baffles, the more the sound smooths out. It works a bit like a bagpipe. Several explosive blasts of air from the piper and you get a long continuous.... nevermind.

I hear what you are saying, but I was thinking that having the baffle out at the end means that the smallest opening is at the very end, rather than taking advantage of the larger diameter opening... ya know?

Heard all of the pipes available to us at the Georgia Rally and I have to say, although they all sound good, my Epco's sound the best.

Yota I'm surprised you can hear anything at all with those Sceptres.

I used to get drowned out by my friend's Sceptres. Then I freaked and re-jetted. Now I just see him in the mirror

Opps, sorry. The SS are almost as loud as the Sceptres. With the baffles out now you can probably fire it up down there and I'd here it up here.

The way that all works, is that with a large chamber to store the exhaust pulse and a relatively small outlet, the sound pulse comes out the end slowly and quietly. If the pipe were large enough and the outlet small enough, you would get a steady, even flow of air out the end that would be nearly totally silent. Think of pipes with a small expansion chamber and large opening as banging a board with a hammer and large pipes with a small opening at the far end as applying the same amount of force to the board in a long steady push.

I know how a muffler works like that, I'm thinking more along the lines of getting a deeper sound out of them, ya know? I play the bari sax, small at the top, BIG at the bottom... That's where I'm coming from theory wise...

The shape of the sax is to balance the frequencies generated as you open the valves. Without the taper, the instrument would have to be much longer. Pipes are more like bugles, so it is just the volume of the expansion area and, to some extent, the nature of the input, that sets the pitch.

A group of Triumph riders were comparing sound systems a few weeks ago in Nelson BC. I was attempting to sincerely explain that the BA with Epcos is understated in it's tone and all the little blue haired ladies in my neighborhood love the Triumph and the beautiful music it makes. One of the guys, an English sounding fellow, who I'd just met remarked that I was "Full of Crap". I think the term was actually "Full of Shite". I concurred with his assessment and we went and got another beer.

BTW; All the old folks in my neighborhood love the Triumph. Old people have good taste.

Could be because it sounds like a motorcycle should. Most of the riki racers sound like a small monkey farting through a bassoon.

That's what I keep telling some of my buddies (when they irritate me) on Jap race-replicas too.

Oops... I need to clarify, another case of "keyboard attention deficit" syndrome for me. The gent I was talking to rides one of those nasty looking black and yellow speedmasters with Thunderpipes from NZ. I was attempting to make the point that comparatively speaking the Epco's are docile, recommended for use in day care and hospital districts by health professionals and generally approved by senior ciitzens everywhere. He wisely and quickly called my bluff. I couldn't get away with anything. Those Canadians were on to me all weekend!
