Can anyone advise if the triumph rack that fits speedmasters with single seat are practical...can you actually carry stuff on it? How do you best attach things to them? does it scratch paintwork?

I don't own them but have seen several and admired them at rallies. They are surprisingly sturdy.

Buy a sportster rack off ebay. It'll save you a bundle and sits lower to the fender. I've used mine on a couple of one to two night trips without any trouble.
Learning from my mistakes... again and again.

I used the pillion rack a lot before I got my tall sissybar and luggage rack. When swapping between the pillion seat and rack I managed to scratch the crap out of my fender back by the rearmost bolt hole. So be careful.
To clarify: I scratched my fender with the bracket from the pillion seat. The little rubber feet under the pillion rear bracket didn't last long and I bought some rubber washers to go between the bracket and fender.
If you're running a single seat on a Speedmaster, you need to have the slotted solo seat bolt that came stock on the America (or an aftermarket version like the one from Newspeedmaster.com).

I have hauled a Gerber (similar to Craftsman) tool bag full of heavy stuff on my Sportster rack many times. It works very well.
Between the bag and the rack I lay down a half sheet of the rubber mats that Sears sells for the top of tool chests. Then any number of bumps at high speed will not dislodge the bag from the rack.

The Sportster rack works great for me. Carried all my camping gear piled high to Birmingham Alabama a couple of times. Tied on with a few bungies. I have a rubber washer under mine because it does scratch the paint a little. Doesn't mount with slotted America pillion pad bolt though, front hole is just a hole in a flat plate that sits under the chrome America seat mounting plate.
