The last months I changed between my stock pipes and long TORs and I must say I like the stock pipes better. They have a deeper tone and better low end torque, BUT when you open up they are too restricted. I want to remove the first baffle in my stock pipe and I wonder if I can beat it out? The baffle seems only to be welded at two spots. Can I expect a big change in sound or tonal quality? Is this going to solve the problem?

There won't be what I would call a big change. It all depends what sound you are looking for. The last baffle is a little tougher than the rest. I knocked quite a few out but you have to be careful because there is mesh right behind that one. The mesh runs the length of the pipe holding packing against the outside. I used an air chisel to work my way around the outside of it aboutmaybe 1/16th to 1/8th inch away from the very edge. It came out fairly easily for me with no damage to the mesh. That being said I know of several members that have tried that and ended up with a mess. I think the best way is to use the double hole saw method. One about the size of the small pipe in the center to act as a center and then a larger one to do the cutting. Both mounted to the same center. Once that one is out it is a simple matter to remove the rest if you decide you want to. The catalyst is a different story. I am told it is soft and tough to get out but haven't tried one yet so can't tell you for sure.

yes thats the one I mean, looks like that has been removed and rewelded back in from the looks of the welds either that or a poor job to begin with. Looks like it would knock back out fairly easily, also I notice that the next baffle in has been drilled.

This pipe has already been modded. Probably why you like them over the TORs. Stock they have a "pught, pught, pught" sound. Very quiet.

Thank you for yor input. That explains why I like the sound of my stock pipes. The former owner must have drilled the pipes and welded the baffle back in there. Originally I changed the pipes to stock because i had to, to pass the inspection that takes place every 2 years. The bike passed inspection but the inspector made a comment that " they are really loud for being stock pipes". Maybe i will try to beat out the last baffle to see if that helps, I can always weld it back in. Thanks, Sven B.

sorry guys, I'm leaving you out. I just didn't know it was an inspection every two years in Sweden, that's all. :P

nah, just rubbing it in that Norway actually has a pretty liberal law when it comes to modding bikes, and that we don't have any inspections on motorcycles. (yet anyways)

Dahla,
Jodå, visst är det inspektion vart annat år, dom mäter med decibelmätare om dom misstänker att du fifflat med piporna...
Jag får skruva en hel del när jag ska kollas, blinkers, pipor, nummerskylt m.m

Translation:
Yes it´s inspection every second year, if they think you have altered the pipes they will measure it with decibelmeter.
I also have to change my numberplate (to small) and my rear turnsignals ( not CE approved)
Now you see, nothing to moderate there...

Must have something to do with an annual inspection and the volume of his pipes.
