After experiencing a 5 hour cage trip turned into a 10 hour trip last Sunday after Thanksgiving, I have to wonder what is it about

SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT

That other people just don't seem to understand?

Problem is everyone thinks the other guy is slower.

I think it's just poor driver training. It's epidemic down here in SC. I mentioned it to a local and they just didn't see it as a problem...so if they don't see it as a problem that means it isn't a problem, I guess.

Drivers now days have ZERO situational awareness...They can be in the fast lane with 6 cars behind them, and not have a clue that they are behind them...All they care is that they are on the interstate, going, and talking on the phone. Most don't even know what a rear view mirror is for. IDIOTS

After passing these individuals on the right, I like to remind them by pulling in front of them and politely gesturing to the right.

Mark,
I think you nailed it. I run into these same morons daily! They don't realize that "65" is the name of the interstate and NOT the speed limit. At 70-80mph if I see someone coming up behind me, I move as soon as its safe to do so - I hate parades.

This thanksgiving weekend I hit the worst traffic I have ever seen coming home on sunday. And I have done this trip every year for 8 years. And you hit it on the head, lane parity would help. I know they teach it. But you get morons that insist on traveling in the left lane, or on 3 lane highways the middle lane forcing those who want to go faster to weave in and out.
A 5 hour drive took 8 hours.

Hey Ryan, is there any particular digit you favor using whenever you perform this service???

My favorite is miles of open double lane highway ahead (of a four lane) and one guy in the right lane and one moron in the left lane, side by side, for miles and miles. As with so many other things, our culture is just plain getting ruder and ruder.

Well, here's what I DO whenever I'm stuck behind some yo-yo going 57MPH in the "Fast Lane" on the freeways 'round here....

I take a page out of the european playbook and flash my headlights at 'em.

(of course, the hard part is dodging the bullets fired my way as I pass 'em)

Yep! Don't cha just LOVE "how hard" it is to acquire a drivers license here in the good ol' U.S. of A.???!!!

(or for THAT matter a license to own a firearm)

You guys should try riding/driving in this country.
Resembles riding the Dakar race or the start of a motocross race.
Everyone weaving across lanes (by everyone) is considered normal.
This evening (40 minutes ago) I had a bus in front and to the right of me - it turned right at an intersection - a car waiting at the intersection (to my right) jumped across my path.
Had I not preempted her doing this and slowed right down, we (Kathy was on the back) would have T-boned her (I think this is the correct expression) and seen our a$$es without a mirror.
It pi$$ed me off so much I swear if I was in my car (pretty big) I would have whacked her to ... you know where.
Incidents like this happen to me every second or third day and I am not exaggerating.
Last week I had two incidents on the same main road within 5 minutes of each other.

Bedouin. Blessed are those eyes that have seen more roads than any man! (Homer).

Unless you're riding on I-59 in my neighborhood where riding in the right lane will jar your crowns out out of your mouth. It's so bad between here and Gadsden that I thought I had forgotten to retighten the front end bolts after replacing my front tire. So, yeah, I live in the left lane on that stretch and I just pull over for those who are going faster. But I do understand the frustration with those who ignore faster moving vehicles in the fast lane.

What I noticed at times here is you want to drive 5 to 10 mph faster than the dude in the right lane and then there is the guy behind you that wants to go faster than that. so you get over to let him by but due to the volume of trafic you might never get back out in the left lane and so I see poeple never wanting to leave the left lane and worse, even when traffic is ok just like uncle Fred. {that's the guy you're passing on the right}. Some days I prefer the back roads. And don't get me started on stop n go, bumper to bumper traffic on the interstate.

I have been on that stretch a few times and can attest to your issues. You are exempted from my fury kind sir.

Dwight, I would do the signal trick, however, it is forbidden by my wife.

Thanksgiving Sunday experience was the last straw. Drastic measures are needed to solve the rapidly decaying driving abilities of the American (and world it appears) populace!

Whenever I'm driving on Interstate 10 between Prescott AZ and L.A. at 80MPH(BTW, the speed limit is 75 in AZ, and 70 in CA) I ALWAYS move over to the right lane and allow anybody goin' 85 or faster to pass me.

And I always sort'a get a kick out of it whenever I drive past these guys after either the AZ or the CA Highway Patrol have pulled 'em over, TOO!

(hey...it AIN'T my job to patrol the highways and byways of America, ya know!)

What are you all complaining about.

This is America, and i can ride/drive in any lane i GD want to ride/drive in. If you dont like it go around. Listen up bozo, after me, your first. Want to argue about it, talk to my friends Smith & Wesson.

Oh sorry, i was doing a rather bad impression of some the Southern Gentlemen i meet up with on the highway in these parts.

I have that problem on A1A quite often, slow/under speeds in the left lane. It usually results in my 2 part hand signal: #1- The thumb and pinky extended to the ear/mouth emulating a phone, and then #2- The one finger salute, as I pass them on the right and cut in front, back to the left lane! OHHHH they KNOW what I mean!

later, Tom.

But, what do I know?

WHAT?! Hey Mark! I think you may be okay back there now! I think I heard Billy Bob moved to the greater Los Angeles area recently!(according to my local ballistics expert, that is)

However, I hear it was quite the "culture shock" once he got out here.(there's no country music radio stations here anymore, ya know)

But then I heard he'd joined the local skin-head gang, and now feels much better about his move once he found some kindred spirits to hang with!

(I LOVE a happy ending...don't YOU?!)

Mark, my ex-pat brit friend. Evidently YOU haven't lost that "funny accent" o' your's yet! You see, once them there Smokeys hear y'all open your pie-hole, they KNOW you is one o' them there "ferriners", and thus you're ALREADY "under the gun", as they say!

My suggestion, SLOW DOWN a bit! And I "ain't talkin'" about just y'all's speed on that there motorsickle o' yours EITHER. You Limeys talk MUCH TOO fast in order to schooze them Smokeys into just given ya only a WARNING!

(ya see, it's ALL in how ya come across initially to the local constabulary as to your ulitmate fate here)

Take ME for instance recently. I got caught doing 51 in a 35MHP zone recently while driving my Spyder over this windy road around here. I smiled and acted surprised and contrite when the officer stopped me. Result: ONLY a warning.

(I'm soooooooooooo good at this sort of thing, ya know...schmoooooozin' that is)

Here here.

Except after I pass them on the right I will shift back into the fast lane and go slower than they are going. Sometimes they get the point and sometimes they don't. Like when they stay in the fast lane going 15 mph under the speed limit behind ME...

Oh and Sunday after T'Day traffic? I caged it home on Monday this year.

Edited: I try to make them do what I had to do, i.e., pass on the right.

Doh! Now my secret's REALLY OUT, Greg!!!

How the heck did you know I always carry a bucket of KFC chicken with me whenever I plan on tackling the twisties with that car? Yep! And those dudes always go for the thighs, alright!!!

For long highway runs, it doesn't matter if you're in a V 12 Ferrari, or a '54 Vee Dub with no brakes - the idiots hogging the left lane set the pace for hundreds of miles at a time.

Which is why we need electronic signs on the major highways that say:

STAY TO THE RIGHT
WHEN NOT PASSING

TURN ON HEADLIGHTS

TURN OFF CELLPHONES

I think that if people follow these 3 simple rules, traffic would be a lot safer every single day...

The ones who get to me and there are plenty here are the people who follow you with the high beams on. The slow guy in the left lane too but not as much. Unless it's one of those 45 in a 65 people then I get impatient.

For our friend over there, Bedouin. Sorry dude, by all of the accounts I've ever heard, your neighboring country of Italia has the worst, most aggressive drivers in the world. Travel agents here consistently tell us to NEVER, EVER, rent or drive a car there. Any comment from our friends in Italia would be welcome.

I toured Italy (amongst other countries) 3 months ago for what could probably be the 25th time (for verification, check out the "May I go now?" thread circa mid-September) and I can tell you that Italians are super fast (racing heritage?) and aggressive (especially when they want to drive over you if you are slower in the fast lane) but could never be considered the worst ... for the most part, they stay in lane.
The Travel Agents are probably thinking of downtown Naples.
Sorry!

My own statistics would put the Estonians as the most aggressive, the Turks (my other neighbours) the worst and the Romanians the most hilarious ... very hilarious.

whats real bad is when a ambuolance or a fire truck, or a cop pases someone on the right.. YOu are never to do that. if you stay as far left as possable everyone can see you. Heck I go into on comming traffic many times. but we have people going to the far right side of the road to pass when in emergency mode.. its sad really

Not too long ago I heard on the radio about some guy selling official-looking windshield banners that say "THGIR EVOM" so when you come up behind the idiot doing 50 in the left lane, they see "MOVE RIGHT" in their rear-view mirror. Apparently it works fairly well.
I've been thinking about getting one for the Jeep - but the fact that my grill is higher than their trunk, and my assortment of offroad lights all shine quite nicely down into their back window bright enough to give them a sunburn on their neck, seems to do the trick too.

Ok first off stop calling it the fast lane!!!! It's a PASSING lane a distinction that should be made more clear and lets start by calling it what it is...I'm not a huge fan of tailgateing BUT if after I have politely "flashed" you and you still refuse to move right...you can bet you will see nothing but grill in your mirror...I don't give two sh!ts how FAST you THINK you're going...if there is someone behind you...it AINT FAST ENOUGH!!! MOVE!!!

If you're doing 100 in a 35 zone and someone is up your a$$ your need to pull over and let them by!!!

As many of you already know I have little or NO patience for road MORONS...and If I'm caught being one I have no issue in admitting my mistake!!

these are the same jackasses who will speed up as you attempt to pass them on the right and close the gap so you can't get by...I'm just glad my truck is now over ten years old and I'm way past the "first scatch" mentality...it's much more 'freeing'...go on sh!thead cut me off...just try to merge your new GXXXXT200 (or what ever the fu(k you call it) at the last second onto the off ramp after passing all of us, who have been waiting in traffic, to cut in from the left at the last second...I'll position my truck to open your 60K overpriced POS ego enhancer, like a can of sardines so fast your gucci loafers will fly off and you might just have to hangthefuck up you selfcenteredselfimportantsmalldickedlittleshithead!

But I really don't have an opinion on this!

I am guilty of the speed up if you try and pass me on the right. I also drive an 8,000 lb tow truck that I am way past the scratch stage. I go one step farther and get along side a slower car or truck and stay there. If I am driving the speedlimit or more and passing slower cars there is no reason to try and pass me on the right and cut me off. If I am lazy and not going very fast I am not in the passing lane or will move over for someone faster, but if I am already going fast I won't. I also move over to allow someone on at an on ramp that most people don't seem to do here.

I am all for use both lanes to the merge point but at said merge point everyone need to take a turn. I don't mean fly by at warp 6 then expect to just cut right in. But if done safely it does seem to make traffic flow better. In PA we have big signs that say to use both lanes to merge point but 99% of the time you will come up on 2 big trucks side by side with miles of empty road ahead of them.

Dang, Like Uncle Charlie said, with your prose I am going to have you write up my next Fly & Ride.

Spot on regarding your phrase about the left lane being the passing lane.

Here in the Midwest we now have Vigilante wannabe cops that
take some kind of pleasure in slowing everyone to the speed limit they cut you off if you try to pass on the right one guy
even got his phone camera out and started filming me AAAaaarh
Thats safe and then there is the illegals that dont even have a drivers license look out for them! If I want to brake the speed limit by 5mi. a hr. I dont need some punk trying to run me off the road for it. people need to get a life and wake up and DRIVE! yea yea this topic annoys me

You know I've been following this thread for a couple days, and since I had to make a 200 mile road trip today, I thought in the interest of being a good citizen, I'd follow Rob's "Wise in the ways of Solomon" advice.

About 75 miles into the trip, it dawned on me "Holy crap, they're referring to multiple lane highways!"

Trucks.
I hate trucks. Lots of hills and valleys around here and truck drivers just ain't what they used to be.
Sure, there's still a few good ones out there, professionals, but for the most part they are morons.
It is common to be on an interstate and see trucks in all lanes, each trying to pass the other, only to come to a hill where they just form a wall in front of everyone else, none of them willing to give up their Nascar lane position...

Once passed, at 5-10-15 above the limit, you settle down into a 5 over speed in the right lane, just trying to stay alive, and the next thing you know, there is a wall of trucks coming up on your butt, still in Nascar mode.
Slow down and let them pass, and you will be upon them again at the next hill. Speed up, and you better be willing to maintain that 20-over-the-limit for awhile or else it's trucks all over again.
I hate trucks. Don't give me the "delivering the things that make our lives better" spiel...
