I've spent the better part of a year working on this when I had time, and I finally rode it for the first time..... I figured I'd post it just to show it off a bit.

Bike was a basket case that sat 20 something years when I bought it. Nothing worked.... now everything does...

I did all work myself except cover the seat & some machine work on the head.

Kurt, beautiful bike. I have a soft spot for Suzis. One of my first bike was a GT550. I hope to own another one some day.
Great job, bring here over to the Smokies sometime and give me shout.

I had a GT550 that served me well. Traded it for my Norton a few years ago. I still have a GT750 in my shed collecting dust and 2 GT380s sitting outside I used rob parts from.I kinda miss the 550 it was a fast fun bike.

Good eyes The rearsets are from a Bandit.. I had to fab brackets, and they fit up pretty well. My first choice was a set of Raask's that I got off an '75 Kawi, but I couldn't fit the brake without modifying them. They were too nice to mess with, so I'm saving them for another time.

Thanks everyone for the complements. After spending so much time in front of it, it's sometimes hard to look at it and see anything but all the blemishes. Today was the first day I could step back and appriciate it.

It better be better than new. It took a lot of time to upgrade 30 year old technology while trying to maintain a 30 year old appearance. That's part of the reason I was attracted to doing this.. There are a lot of similarities in what Triumph has done with the new twins (especially the Bonnie) and trying not to lose the nostalgiac look of the era while I updated this bike.

Wow, great resto-mod! My brother sold his late 80's GSXR1100 last year, I love those air-cooled gixxers. Beautiful work, enjoy lofting that front wheel!

Nice resurrection! The one bike I regret selling was a GS850 called Black Angus. Your Red Streak is giving me those thoughts that cost you money.

Oddly enough, the OL's training wheels bike was a '77 GS400. That had a lot of electrical problems due to a third rate charging system design.

I had a '77 GS400. You are right about that charging system. I worked a 12 hour shift in Baltimore, rode home 2 hours on the bike at 3 AM. Charging system was shot so I couldn't stop or the bike wouldn't restart. It was in the 50's early in Fall. By the time I got home, I was shaking so much from the cold, I had to sit in front of an open oven door for an hour.

Your right, charging systems on these are bit suspect. I've upgraded the regulator/ rectifiers to a newer model integrated unit, and added a few more ground points throughtout as I rebuilt the wiring harness. This, along with converting to Dyna coils and electronic ignition hopefully puts any electical woes to rest
