I live on the edge of the 'Austin Village' http://www.virtualbrum.co.uk/austin.htm , an estate built by Lord Austin for workers at his nearby Car factory (now mostly demolished).

The roads are lined with trees - all very pretty - BUT, leaves fall at this time of year particularly after high winds and heavy rain.....and what do the residents do with them ?

They sweep them from their drives, gardens, yards and paths and the sidewalk and verges into great piles in the road, so if we are lucky, it leaves (pun unavoidable) a narrow strip down the middle of the road where you can see some black stuff to ride on. It also blocks the drains so the rainwater can't run away. Then we get a frost !

Coupled with a huge camber, parked cars and blind bends and junctions, it is a real challenge to drive and ride.

Wouldn't mind so much but the Council provide green plastic sacks and a collection service for garden waste.

In the UK, if snow falls on the sidewalk and you slip on it - it's a no fault accident. When someone has swept the snow off the sidewalk, if someone falls, then the sweeper is responsible. Same with leaves, but these dorks don't realise it.

It pi$$es them off when you walk down the gutter kicking the leaves back onto the sidewalk.

Like being 12 years old again !!!!

If you do it today you MIGHT regret it. If you CAN'T do it tomorrow you WILL regret it.

People do the same here, but our city has a free pickup for up to one cubic yard, after that you have to pay a little for the additional amount. The pickup is done in the spring and fall. Our city uses dump trucks and a large four wheel loader with a four-in-one bucket to pickup the leaf piles. Before retiring in 1997, I was the City Superintendent. They call them a City Manager now. The leaves and brush are taken to an area where it is ground up and made into compost. The compost is used in the city parks and cemetery now, but someday it is hoped to bag it and sell it.
