ANY head protection is better than NO head protection.

I think.

Maybe.

I can't remember.

Besides, wearing a helmet protects your identity when you do something stoopid.

Something absorbs energy that is acted upon your head when you slam into something. PLastic and foam does a far better job than skin alone. Thats all I got to say about that!

I read the article when it came out in the magazine. I just thought that it was very interesting that Bell, KBC, OGK, Shoei and Simpson didn't want to spare a couple helmets in the name of free publicity. Unless of course they know something we would find out. I also thought it was interesting that some of the lesser expensive helmets that are DOT certified only did better than the more expensive DOT/Snell certified helmets.

On the website version of the article, there is a link to the Snell Foundation's response to the article. They are not happy to say the least. Of course Motor Cyclist has a response to the response.

Regardless of standards, testing and cerifications, as interesting as it all is, I'll buy what is most comfortable for me at a good price.

It does give a lot to think about. Prior to initially reading the article, I was about to buy a new Shoei helmet for my daughter to wear. It was to replace an old Fulmer (DOT only) that she had been wearing. As mentioned in the article, she has a smaller head, so if they are correct, a stiff helmet for her would be that much worse.

I'm still on the fence.

That article about the helmets was excellent. Motorcyclist's new format blows, but at least I didn't see any full page adds for levitra in their June, 2005 issue that I bought off the news stand. I used to have a subscription to the Motorcyclist rag, but cancelled it because as ET is in my grandkids vocabulary, I didn’t want ED to be as well.

To understand how a helmet protects—or doesn't protect—your brain, it helps to appreciate just how fragile that organ actually is. The consistency of the human brain is like warm Jello. It's so gooey that when pathologists remove a brain from a cadaver, they have to use a kind of cheesecloth hammock to hold it together as it comes out of the skull.

That was part of the article. I don't think this person has ever been to an autopsy. I have been to over one hundred and the brain comes out intact and solid. You can hold it in your hands without any problem.

Maybe that's what they're like after a biker wrecks using a Snell approved helmet?

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Interesting reply from Snell. Still, scrape away the details regarding which is "better" or "worse" too often get's lost in the translation. What is certain, you can be wearing a $20 helmet and you'll do better than with having nothing on.

I even heard two days ago from the family of a patient we flew this spring, someone on scene told them had he been wearing a helmet the patient would have died! That is crap! The guy broke his back and wearing or not wearing a helmet would not have changed a thing.

Anyone who makes such a statement is so full of it, I don't care who they are, or what their level of education is they have no way to assess all the variables of a given accident and make any such statement.

I see the heads of guys that slam them into the pavement without a helmet and some how walk away with no real significant head injury, but they walk away with real knarly scars on their heads, or with pieces of their scalp missing.

Always comes down to; you will do better with one than without one. For those who will say a helmet "caused a neck fracture", just as lame, you really can't use those specifics on any specific event. Though it is possible, it is possible that the energy acted on the body may have fractured the neck or damaged the brain without a helmet as well because stuff happens when you slow down real fast. Just the nature of what we do.

Ok...sorry, I'll stop now.
