Been reading some post on favorite tunes and there seems to be a lot of classic rock fans out there. Nothing wrong with that since I got that kind of music in my CD collection. I got all kinds, rock(old and new), classical, opera, R&B(older than 92, my water mark year when R&B started to go down the toilet),and a tiny bit of counry(huge Johny Cash fan) But my main love is Jazz(old and new) just woundering if there were any jazz cats out there.

I love jazz, grew up playing tenor sax in a number of local jazz groups. I just saw Spyro Gyra recently at Jazz Alley (local Seattle jazz club that gets really big names).

Saw Return To Forever A few years back. Chic, Stanley, Al, and Lenny. A great show. Saw a local band. Alpha & Omega this summer at an outdoor fest, they were really together. Just smooth. Brand X was another fav. Lots of jazz in my collection.

I've been playing jazz since Jr High to one degree or another. I play bari. My problem is name recognition... I can't even come close to remembering all the names of people, ya know? Maybe cause it's just a name, not a NAME like a band or whatever. In college we had some great guest performers and clinics (Christian McBride, Joe Lovano, a couple of the Marsalis Brothers) and seen a few interesting shows (Chick Corea and Gary Burton was fun). Also been to europe a few times with the band (Spain, Italy, Greece) and had a GREAT time! Love it. Wish I had an outlet to play more now... my chops aren't what they used to be!

I love jazz. I didn't think anyone on here did, but one of my favorites is Sidney Bechet especially is soulful rendition of "Petite Fleur"

I was wondering myself about that since every time that a music topic came up jazz got little to no mention. That's why I posed the question and I'm glad I did.

One of my two desert island musicians is Miles Davis. The other is Doug Sahm (texas blues, r & b, texicano, rock, and soul)! Check them both out and enjoy the tunes.

Back when I was a kid in Boston, my mom -who loved jazz- got a job at Storyville, the top jazz club in town, so she could be closer to it. At that time, Boston "Blue Laws" didn't allow alcohol after midnite Saturday, so the clubs had to close.
But my mom would invite the musicians back to the house to party. So, I got to meet many of the greats. Our favorite guest was Dizzy Gillespie, who was a chess grand master. He'd spend time playing chess with my little sister while the party raged on around them.
So, yup, you could say I'm a jazz fan...grew up with it.

I like jazz but it never comes to mind when I see that "greatest song" topic come up; probably because I think of jazz tunes as performance pieces and not "songs". Check out the new Miles Davis boxed set "The Complete On The Corner Sessions" for those 70's hot funk jazz sessions...

Kind of Blue is a perfect CD, nothing is better than 50 to mid 60s Miles Davis, nothing.

I love jazz, hundreds of my cds are jazz, the largest grouping of my cd collection. Oscar Peterson, especially with Heeb Ellis and Ray Brown are great. Clifford Brown and Max Roach. Wes Montgomery. Jimmy Smith. Blossom Dearie, Billie Holiday, Ella, Sarah, Anita O Day ( O'Day's cd with Oscar Peterson is great ). So much good good stuff. For todays musicians, Roy Hargrove, Joshua Redman, Kurt Elling and Kevin Mahogany are terrific.

I went to show once and afterwards they had a reception to meet the musicians, so I wandered in, I met Louis Bellson, Benny Carter, Teddy Wilson, Red Norvo, George Duvivier, and some other names that dont come to mind at the moment, but way cool to converse with these greats. I have seen Louis Bellson many times afterwards, and wow, talk about a drum wizard.

Absolutely. New Orleans, Chicago, and some West Coast jazz in the classic forms are my passion. I am also a sucker for all things Swing and Big Band. I haven't gone too far into either Cool or Bop, but I do dabble.

It would be very difficult for me to pick and absolute favorite song, but my favorite jazz instrument is the near extinct clarinet.

Thus, Benny, Artie Shaw, Buddy DeFranco, and still playing Alan Vache' are my favorites.

The gem of my collection is "The Tatum Group Masterpieces Volume Seven". Art Tatum, Red Callender, Buddy DeFranco, and Bill Douglass. I highly recommend.

Benny Carter/Jonny Hodges - Prelude to a Kiss. One of my favourite pieces.

My uncle was in a Jass band that used to tour the pubs and clubs of Liverpool, with me in tow. The Blue Magnolia Jass Orchestra.

My buddies and I played that at my wedding A pretty hack job I might add, but it was fun!

I'm a big Gerry Mulligan fan for obvious reasons, check out his Final Recordings. Awesome disc. Lots of Brazillian stuff. I also like "Gerry Mulligan meets the Saxophonist". A collection of duets. "Scrapple from the Apple" with Stan Goetz is my fav off that!

Also been a Jazz addict for over 30 years. The Rochester Jazz scene isn't what it once was but we still get some greats passing through. The Eastman School is responsible for that. I got permission to photograph Dizzy Gillespie for 2 nights running on his 75th birthday at a local club in Rochester (Jazzberry's) not too long before his passing. I got a great close up head and shoulders shot of him and his famous billowing cheeks framed against the backdrop of Gap M's black grand piano. Didn't know he was a Grand Master chess player tho' Steve.

These days, a lot of people tend to lump it in with jazz (maybe because they both use real instruments?) but I mostly like big band music. Can't stand this screaming and yelling or the mumbly crap they try to pass off as music these days.

There is some jazz that I really like, especially the old classic stuff like 'Moanin'. There was a small group that used to play at Studio 4 in Stuttgart that I wouldn't miss if I could get over there.

Jaymo, one of my Dad's best friends that he met while attending the UofR's graduate business school is a trombone player who studied at Hobart. He goes back and teaches classes in jazz all of the time and has opened an awesome jazz club on Hilton Head Island, SC. I think he still does shows with some band up around the Finger Lakes. His name is Bob Masteller, and I believe his Dad was a big band leader back in the day.

Then you should search out "Into the Sunset" a recording from the Arizona Historical Jazz Society that includes original master session work and tribute arrangements dedicated to the late Peanuts Hucko. I had the true pleasure of doing some engineering for the tribute segment and those cats could swing.

edit After a little bit of searching I found my dim memory to be inaccurate, here is the real CD and it looks like the session I engineered at Heartdance made the cut Peanuts Hucko disc

Must see movie for any jazz devotee. The music was recorded live on a sound stage.
Lonette McKee sings a cover of "How Long Has This Been Going On?" that'll melt the soles of your shoes off.

Bucky: I don't know if I've seen this movie, but I own the soundtrack. Dexter Gordon is great.

Anbody listen to trombone players? How about Bill Watrous or JJ Johnson?

I am a music teacher and play trombone locally. I've played with several groups over the years including an authentic 17 piece big band. We would play wedding receptions, big band dances, Elks club gigs, etc...

All of you who listen to Miles and Trane should check out Joshua Redman. He's a younger tenor sax player--Ornette Coleman's son if I remember correctly--who plays with ideas like trane and a sound like Dexter Gordon.

Brain rambles -

Nothing quite like a live big band sound. In my high school years, a buddy's dad use to periodically take us to hear Buddy Rich & band, with Sal Nistico. Great stuff.

When Natalie Cole toured to support the album of her Dad's stuff, she sang with an orchestra of 25 or 30 pieces?. What a sound. We heard them in the shed at Tanglewood, which has no walls to slap the sound around. They were so good they could have made "Mary Had A Little Lamb" groove.

Up here in the woods, Larry Young (Khalid Yasin) built a studio in an old barn. His band at the time included Fernando Saunders, Sandy Torano, and (Nirada) Michael Walden. Through the brother of a friend, we had a chance to play in there. The walls were lined with lead, covered by rubber backed carpet. Never heard a room sound that quiet.

One of my good friends, is a bone player. So was my concert band director in college. Good stuff.

Joshua Redman is good too! I think I've seen him...

I played bari in the big band in college. The most challenging concert we ever did was the Duke Ellington Sacred Works concert (I have a recording of us playing it if anyone wants a copy...). It was hard because Duke wrote the parts for his players, not their instruments. So his bari player (I forget the name...) could play the altissimo stuff like nobodies business, and the horn I was using at the time leaked like a siv, so I couldn't hit half the notes! Took a LOT of practice. It was great fun tho. We had a tap dancer for "David Danced" and brought in some pros our director knew to sing the parts. Good times for sure.
