Thought I'd lighten up the mood around here a bit. Was listening to Shakria's last offering."My hips don't lie." A tasty tune to be sure but not quite up there in the greatest all time. I'm gonna have to go with "Shining Star" Earth Wind & Fire. Why you as. Its just a song that stirs the soul. I have quite a collection. From headbanging heavymetal to classical and everything in between. But today its shining star. Could be memorys of my youth. Driving around the beach at nags head in my VW beetle with earth wind & fire blasting out my 8 track.

Well, I enjoyed my favorite "riding song" on my ride to work this morning. Steppenwulf's Magic Carpet Ride. Something about that song just makes me want to get up a move!

Well, this topic hasn't almost been done to death! Search for "best" and I'm sure there's more......

Today it's GnR - You could be mine. Been driving the wife's Jeep and the radio is broke, so I dug out an old GnR cd....
and that song just rocks turned up to 11 at 90mph!

True enough this topic has been covered. Even so, it's hard to top Hank William's "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry"...pick your favorite artist as this is one of the most covered songs in the history of modern music.

Depends on the day.

I have XM Deep Tracks on in my office all day and man do they play some good stuff.

But if i had to pick a one song then i think it would be

Louis Armstrong's, Wonderfull World. I always stop and smile when ever i hear that song.

Well, for right now I've got to say the Metallica version of "Turn the Page" and "The Gambler" by Kenny Rogers. Also "Highwayman" by Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings, & Willie Nelson.

Won't get fooled again, by the Who. or,
More than a feeling, by Boston, or,
Saturday nights alright for fighting, by Elton John.

Actually, there's too many for just one greatest song.

Without going into the cavernous depths of my brain (Its far too late in the week to start thinking) , I tend to agree that choice is way high on the list.

It's not actually a song, it's an entire record. It's brilliant, but it's not a song title.

I can think of so many and I couldn't choose one over the other. Many many Pink Floyd, Zepplin , Traffic (Low Spark of High Heeled Boys), Black fish, Tesla, Stevie Ray Vahun , Cream ,Tesla, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Guns N Roses , Greatful Dead ,and the list just goes on and on. I love song by all mentioned and more and would have a hard time choosing one over the other. What I like best today might not be what I say tomorrow, depends on my mood.

I'm with the "depends on my mood" opinion.
Today it would be one of these:

Amazing Grace
Can't You Hear Me Knockin
Low Spark of High Heeled Boys
Me and Bobby McGee

It's a toss up between

She's No Angel, Kitty Wells, 1957

and

Well Meet Again, Vera Lynn, 1942

In today's world we have a toss up between

Burn About Out, Children of the Anachronistic Dynasty, 1987

and

Cold, Crossfade, 2004

Okay, There is no best ever song...

I agree, as great as that song was they played it so many times on the radio to this day I don't play it on purpose. I only listen to it,and enjoy it, if I play the whole album. I love When the Levie Breaks and Misty Mountain Hop.

Amazing thing about Amazing Grace - It can be sung or played in any musical genre and still dig deeply into the soul. I agree with Moe and Paula that there probably isn't a 'best' but it doesn't get much better than A.G. - Good music with a good message - and that seems key to what usually defines a good song - both the notes and the lyrics. Nearly all that have both become timeless.

I'll add to the list anything sung by James Taylor, Alison Krause, and Sarah McLachlin and most C,S,N &Y, particularly the numbers composed by Stills - All head music (I ain't much for dancin' - Like to listen).
