I own a Speedmaster, there does not appear to be alot of difference between the two bikes apart from visual i.e. appearances such as handlebars, rev counter etc. I am interested to know why they make the two bikes when they are practically the same. And also how people rate the two bikes.

black vs chrome, seats, bars, wheels, brakes. the bikes are really the same, all it comes down to is what fits you better

Biggest difference is the twin disc brakes on the Speedmaster. You can see from my signature line what my choice was.

They are essentially the same, twins so to speak, haha! I have actually owned both, I now prefer the handlebars and risers of the Speedy, but I kind of miss the front wheel with spokes look, although that is no longer an option on the new America's.

And a big difference to braking it is, after upgrading to the twin..

The Speedmaster also seems to have less of a tendency to warp the front rotor but they are the same engine and frame it just boils down to riding position and look.

The Speedy is for getting there in a hurry. The America is for "cruising". Not saying the America is slow, or slower, just that the riding positions lend them each to their own element. When I have my feet up on the rear pegs, and I'm leaned down over the tank, it's an 800cc sport bike.

Best advice... Sit in both and determine which one fits you best. The ergonomics of both bikes is different because of the bars.

I think we all know it's the classic laid back style of the America that really catches the eye and holds you there...

Speedmasters......ESPECIALLY black ones are the epitome of classic good looks, laid back yet devilish looking with the ever apparent blacked out motor....the handlebars of course give the impression of speed and grace.
Americas on the other hand although definitely pleasing to the eye are for those who adhere to an ambiance of chrome and are more SUITED to the geriatric crowd.

I would have to agree with you on that one pipedr. I think the speedmaster is a much classier looking bike. In fact I can't think of any bike that compares with it.

You are only as old as the one you feel,or something like that!
I am patial to the Amerimaster since I have elements of both and quite a few that are from neither. Come right down to it who here actually has an America or Speedmaster? Most of us have something of our own creation based on one or the other.

I chose the America because of the spokes, and the faster 790 engine. In my opinion, they stopped making the America after 06, now it's just the speedmaster II.

I've said it before and probably will again. I'm sticking with my wire wheels, carbs, and chain. I'm also partial to chrome.

I'll have a TBASS when I get the TBS wheel mounted up. Starting with a TRUE Triumph Bonneville America (rare model only made in 2002):
TBA + tbS + Sportglide hardbags.
Or if I ditch the HD hardbags, the second S can stand for "Speedmaster rightside brake parts."

Oh and though this might not be popular to bring up on the Bonneville 'America' forum but having the word America on the side cover of a motorbike is not a strong selling point in MANY parts of the world....

If the names had been reversed, I would have preferred the Speedmaster instead of the America. Wide bars, split seats, wire wheels, and chrome did it for me - not the name.
