It's been pert riding to work this week now that north AL has dipped into the 20s at night. I'm really impressed at how well the America has handled the lowered temps; fires right up and runs strong. I've been engaging the ignition switch while I roll out the garage in hopes that this will pre-warm the carb bodies a bit before I hit the starter...anyone got any insight into the realities of the carb warmers? And, maybe a good balaclava that doesn't look like I've joined Al-Qaeda...

It's been pretty cold up here too. I have to back my 04 Speedy out of the garage. I always head it out the driveway and use the choke and she starts right up. The carb warmers seem to do the job right away. The important thing is never to roll the throttle when starting. Doing so changes the timing and you will get a backfire.

The Yanks say to turn the ignition on and wait a bit. I have started wearing my solid leather rocker jacket. The Raptor Jacket is a bit too holy. (sic)

I never touch the throttle anyway, I'm just impressed how easy it starts when cold...almost better than when it's hot outside.

Yep, I've been giving it a minute before I hit the button and (at the risk of lighting up Litzerski) I have to say my Fox Creek jacket is the shizzle for brisk riding.

well, I've had people try and tell me different, but as far as I know, this is the deal. The carb warmers are to prevent icing under cold damp conditions, and do not do anything for your start-up. The owners manual(but what does it know?) says, "DO not turn ignition on without starting the engine as electrical damage may incur" as the villagers sometimes storm the castle screaming burn 'em! at this point, I say just read the manual and do what you feel comfortable doing with your bike.
I never wanted to lead, and I never wanted to follow.
I just wanted to ride.

You would have to do more than that, like taking away his brewski!

yep I rolled the throtle on last year. The back fire blew the side pannel off, seperated the exhaused and blew the air box to bits. I also had to change my pants. Man that was some bang I can tell you. Just let carb warm up.

And just how are you supposed to start the motor without turning on the ignition first?

They mean not to turn the key on and leave it on with out starting the engine.

thanks, I thought it was obvious as well, but ....they mean do not just leave it on without starting the engine. It takes a few secs maybe, between turning the key and hitting the starter, that is to be expected. They dont want you to leave it on for an inordinate amount of time, say 2 full minutes waiting for the "carb heaters" to work

Yep, I have to agree that it does start right up in cold weather. I just purchased my new 07 America last Friday and it's been cold up here in Seattle (around 32 degrees in the morning) and it just starts right up. I can't begin to express how awesome this bike is.
