So John (Big Poppy) came over this morning with his balancer to help me with my bike, I installed the 132 jets yesterday, along with the thumb screws for the mixture adjustment, and the allen head bowl screws. I had also chopped out the bottom of the airbox, and cut out the bottom of the stock air filter. I installed the TOR "Shorties", and MAN...what a difference. A dude was walking down Roswell road in Marietta, I let off the throttle and "BANG BANG BANG", he started to jump over the wall of the confederate grave yard!!!!thinkin he was being shot at...John says it has unbelievable power, but is EXTREMELY loud....Kimmy jumped on it and came out of the cul-de-sac at like 7 grand in first gear, trying to get a rise out of the neighbors...Im lookin for the cops to come down thru here any minute...Not sure of this new "sound" coming from my bike, I guess time will tell....It sounds best just idling...

Great stuff Mark. You say it is real loud but being tors, which btw I have a set of (long version) as well a much the same setup (only presently), you'll probably get used to the sound pretty quickly and after a while realise they aren't too bad at all really. Good stuff and welcome to your new addiction

reminds me of when I was 20, with cut down shorties and little to no shorties. The downtown strip was still rollin and the two story buildings on both sides of the block (and the alleys) were great fun. Ten at night, roll into the canyon like alley, and let er rip through two gears. Man, I bet the people in the upstairs appartments hated me. But just some once in a while onery fun!

Kimmy said...."Bet you won't be sneakin out at 4 am anymore!!!!" I mean this SOB is LOUD...When I decelerate, it's really just too much...considering doing something else...If I could get the extreme "popping" to stop, I could handle it...

It shouldn't pop with a bang. It should gurgle. Some mild popping on decel is normal. You are either lean or have atmosphere rentering the head from the exhaust.
Need some more info, too:
Is the AI still on the bike? If yes, get rid of it cuz that is the problem. It introduces air back into the system and make it lean.
What size pilot jet? Did you and John change it?
If it was turned correctly, (I'm sure it was if John was there) then you likely have a leak in the exhaust. Did you use exhaust sealant when you put the TOR slip-on's on?
the first three things to check before tossing the TOR's (TOR's aren't that loud on the exhaust DB scale):
1. Use hi-temp RTV sealant on the TOR slip-on joint. Problem still persist? Goto #2 2. Check torque at header to head bolts. these are known to loosen up.Problem still persist? Goto #3 3. Check the mix screws. Turn one all the way and count the revolutions to get your starting point. Should be 2.5 turns or something like that. Start turning the mixture screws out 1/4 turn at a time(both of them, of course) and go for a test ride. This richens up the mixture. If you get to 3.5 turns, you may need to step up a jet size or two (assuming you are still at the stock 40).

I had the same problem with the loud banging on decel when i fitted my America with short slashed pipes and freak kit. After a few main jet changes etc, i upped the pilots from 42 to 45 and this considerably reduced the banging to a more of a popping sound which your'e always gonna get anyway. Stick with the pipes..you'll get used to them.

No, did not use high temp RTV on joint, will do that tonight. The pipes are secure to the heads, and the AI has long been removed. And no, did not change the pilot jet. Went from 120 (stock) jet to 132 per Dinks calculator. Guess I will order pilots now...

I rode the bike yesterday about 60 miles round trip, got her out on Highway 5 going out of Douglasville and opened her up. I normally shift into 5th gear around or going through 60 mph or so (no tach), but now, I find the need to shift into 5th is around 70 mph, then the thing feels like it's going into overdrive, and does'nt "plane out" rpm wise until around 80, so now the new "cruise" speed is around 85 where she's happy....Most of the time now, anything under 65, Im in 4th gear....WOW.

Order the shim kit when you order the new pilots. A set of four is like $2. That "plane out" feeling is a lean mid range (more than likely). Put a shim on the stock needles and the bike will pull hard through the midrange as well. I run two shims, but I'm more open on both ends (FREAK and drag pipe fishtails).
BTW- it would be a good idea to balance the carbs again after all this is done.
Did the RTV help/ work?

Applied RTV and let sit overnight, left pipe still leaking at joint, backed out mixture screws to 3.5 turns, MUCH better...sounds schweet on decel now...went to have a beer at watering hole, lots of heads turning, and ALOT of "I had an old triumph one time" stories.....
