I am officially dubbing myself moron of the day!!! I just got my new triumph, an 07 blue and white America, and was putting it in the garage. Well, to make a short story short, I brushed the corner of a plastic tarp I have in the garage on the exhaust and instantly melted about a three inch piece of plastic to my exhaust. I put some water on it pretty quickly, which cooled most of it down enough to get off before it baked on there, but there's a little on there that wouldn't come off with just the water. Anyone out there have any home remedies for stupidity? If not I'd settle for a home remedy for taking the plastic of my pipe without ruining the chrome. I thought about using something like goo gone, but am nervous about what that might or might not do to chrome. Any suggestions?

After you run it again and it charcoals up nicely use some Easy Off oven cleaner. Protect the rest of the bike as the spray is potent, it'll come right off and the chrome will be nice and shiny.

Be VERY careful not get any Easy-Off spray on the paint or blacked parts of the engine. It will discolor painted surfaces.
Sometimes you can heat up the pipes and wipe some or most plastic or boot rubber off with a rag. The Easy Off will take care of the rest. Rub it out with Blue-Job and they will be good as new.
I've used a little gasoline on a rag to remove road tar and other junk from my pipes. (not when they're hot) There's probably better stuff to use. Acetone might work, but I've never tried that.

I wouldn't use it on a hot surface, let the pipe cool unti you can comfortably touch it. Shield the rest of the bike with section of cardboard or a thick towel and spray carefully, as the product contains lye. Be patient, it's not unusual to wait an hour or more before the burnt mung is loose enough to wipe off. Follow with your favorite chrome polish and you'll be good to go.

I did the same sorta with a blue tarp. You can use acetone on a rag rubbing the remainder of the stuff continually adding more acetone. It will melt the plastic off the pipes without hurting the chrome in any way.

Thanks for the info, I think I have some Easy Off oven spray somewhere around here and will try it tonight after work. I had a stain on one of my pipes years ago and tried the Easy Off then, but I think the problem was that I didn't leave it on quite long enough. Anyway, I'll try leaving it on for a while before wiping it off, and if that doesn't work I'll go with the acetone. Appreciate all the response, nothin' sucks more than screwing up your new bike!

It's better not to HAVE overspray. Fold up a rag, spray the Easy-Off on it and wipe it on the pipe.

Brian, I think maybe we made the point about how caustic the product is

I've had good luck taking plastic melt off the pipes with one of these The chrome is pretty hard, and with a light touch the blade floats over it without scratching

The razor blade is gonna probably get some action, because I tried the oven cleaner, which took some of it off, but there's still some sticky stuff that just doesn't seem to want to come off. Got most of it though.

Acetone will work as it will melt the plastic w/o hurting the chrome.

If the chrome is discolored you may need to use a product such as Blue Away or Blue Job or some other type of metal polish. The first 2 work well but will leave very fine scratches that are barely noticable.

So far everything mentioned will work just fine. Once the mung is gone be sure to clean all of the residue off the pipe and follow with some kind of chrome polish so you don't burn on a new blemish. My choice would be WD-40 on a rag, wiped clean and dried with a clean rag followed by a thourough buffing with Wenol. Everybody has their faves...

The most successful move ended up being the razor blade. Tried it this morning with great success and no damage to the chrome. It was like scraping paint off a mirror. Took me about four minutes to get it all off (I'm sure that the Easy Off and Acetone loosened it up though ). Thanks for all the suggestions!

Finishing touch? Chrome polish. It has very mild abrasive in it and will also remove any minor residual left behind.

You'll have to get a mid-90s HD, no one ever gives them a second look....
