I was just reading a post and it got me to thinking (and that don't happen often). Who and how many of you out there remember and used a kick start? Call me lame old goat but I miss them.

Had many bikes with kick start. This got me thinking too Al why do you rarely see kick start on most modern bikes other than dirt bikes? It sure came in handy when the battery was dead.

The first 3 bikes I owned had kick start. Loved them and wish the America was equipped with one. It would be a real cool addition to an already cool bike.

I miss them, every bike I had until my SM was kick start. These bikes wouldn't kick back much and if tuned right not at all. All my Triumphs are 1 kick bikes and so is my 64 BMW. Could always tell a man who knew how to tune a bike by how many times he had to kick it.

remember what it was like to stall at a busy intersection, and have to kickstart and it not wanting to start on the first or second kick??? and then haveing to push it out of traffics way and by the time you got it started you had to sit thru another red light?? it would be nice to have one for backup but without a magneto, i wonder if a kick starter would be enough to get her runnin?? this is my first bike with disc brakes and a button starter and i think i like them both.

When I first started riding as an adult (almost 10 years ago), my first bike was almost MINT 73' cb750.

The wiring on that poor girl was a mess....my battery would drain all the time and the kickstart meant the difference of getting home a few times.

That bike was AWESOME.

got it for next to nothing (the guy had NO CLUE) and sold it for a nice sum.

Always a good fall back postion in case of tired battery; that said, the button sure is easy

Used 'em for years, don't miss HAVING to use it, but It'd be nice insurance for the button, as previously stated.

We always called electric start the "girly button" Man did I catch a lot of flack when I got the SM after dishing it out all those years. The electric start is nice to have, but I would like to have a kick start too. I would use it most of the time probably. As easily as my SM starts with the button I bet it would be a 1 kick bike, maybe 2 cold. If I could start my old Panhead with the kick start the SM should be no problem.

I had one on my first bike a 1971 Yamaha RD 350 and my second a '71 Triumph, Trophy 650. I don't really miss kick starting but it was kind of

73 Yamaha 125 and 250 Enduro, both kickers. Pain in the butt, but WHEN they fired on the first or 2nd kick, it was cool!!!(when not, I limped for a while!!!)

My '03 Triumph is my first bike without a kickstart. I still don't trust that electromagical pushbutton gismo.

Kickers and manual ignition advance are a definite safety factor. If you can manage to start your bike, you are probably in good enough condition to ride safely.

I got no kick from the pain

Sometimes beginning that process
to start
my machine
would result in a sprain
of the knee

So don't take that button
from me

I haven't had a kickstart bike for 25 years.
But...

Every electric-start only bike I've had since then has had to be bump-started at least once.

So the best is electric and kick, like the late-70's KZ1000's.

And the new dirt bikes without a kickstart are a stupid idea. Try to bump-start in mud.

Sure would be nice to have the option when the battery is dead.

Dick, I have a Boyer-Bransden electronic ignition on my 1970 custom 650 Triumph Streettracker, and the bike won't kick start(or start at all) if the battery isn't charged up to a certain level.

And so I'm not sure, but I wonder if our Hinckley Triumphs with their electronic ignitions would start with a kick if their batteries were in the same state???

(anybody care to offer a guess here?)
