Any tips on how to adjust the headlight so that the two beams are optimized? When I'm out on a dark road and flip to high beam, it seems to illuminate the trees rather than the road, yet on the dip beam, things seem OK.

Hi Siggy, I know there is a method for adjustment, something about being 17 feet away from a vertical wall and where each beam should be centered. I adjust mine on the road. I switch beams back and forth, and try to make the low beam extend as far as I can while keeping the high beam out of the eyes of oncoming traffic. Ride Safe, Dennis

Siggy,
I had the same experience as far as the high beam waking up the birds and squirrels. A visor helped remedy that quite a bit.

Sit on the bike and have it upright and have a helper measure the distance from the floor to the center of the headlight lens.
Pick a flat wall where you can locate the bike so the headlight is 17 feet from the wall. Place a horizontal mark on the wall two inches lower than the height of the center of the headlight.
Adjust the headlight vertically so that the flat top of the beam is just up to that line (marked two inches down at 17 feet).
Horizontal adjustment should center the beam ahead of the line of the bike.

Everyone has given you valuable advice as to how to adjust your light. The only suggestion I would add is get a xenon bulb. I got mine from Brent at www.newspeedmaster.com and can really tell a difference. The wife likes it too, because it makes me more visible to others on the road.
Any landing you can walk away from is a good one.
