Been running drilled airbox with no snorkle for about 15 or 20 thousand miles. Been caught in rain several times. Left for Barber Thursday afternoon in the teeth of a storm. Rained non-stop for 100 miles. Another couple of hours in the rain Friday morning. Bike started losing power, cutting out, then died altogether in the middle of nowhere. Got it started and limped in to the next small town. Turns out the air filter was completely soaked, and bottom of airbox full of water. Ran like a champ without the filter. I'll be installing a non-drilled filter tomorrow. BTW, if you need parts from Bogart's in Birmingham Alabama, call first. They didn't have a Speedy/America air filter, and last trip they didn't have a chain for my buddy's Tiger. Large, beautiful dealership, mostly new bikes and t-shirts I guess.

Scroll around on Pat's site ( DINQUA ) , if I remember correctly , there is some info on preventing water in your modded box .

About Bogart's in Birmingham Alabama, call first. They did not even have a stock America clutch cable, even though they are a fairly large dealer.

Lonzo, if the bottom of the airbox is drilled, how does it hold water? I was confused whether water got in from the bottom or the top with no snorkle.

The bottom of the airbox has a raised rim inside to receive the bottom of the filter. I soaked up about 2 ounces or so of water, it was up to the top of that rim.

You feel the water leaked in from the bottom? Could it be water was forced in under the seat and found it's way in the topless airbox? It still seems strange that water would go UP into the airbox. I have no snorkel and the rest of the airbox is stock. I've worried about water getting in the top. I've even found leaves in there before.

I'm sure it came in from bottom. When I pulled seat off, didn't really notice anything saturated under there. My hole is elongated, same shape as filter. I cut out bottom of filter leaving about 1/4" around perimeter, and cut airbox hole to match. You can see flat top of swingarm through hole. Between the swingarm and bottom of airbox is a space open to rear tire. Water would be sprayed into that gap like crazy at highway speeds.

Hey Lon, have you considered blocking off that space?

I'm not going to chance it. I was on my way to Barber with a group of eight, held the whole group up while I was screwing around with my bike. Felt kind of sheepish when I discovered the problem was a result of one of my mods. Dependability is more important to me than the small gain realized by that hole. Pulling the snorkle made a big difference, the hole didn't seem to make that much, anyway.

I find it puzzling. I rode quite literaly in the pouring rain for 6 1/2 hours with the same mod on the way home from Mena, Arkansas. The rain came down from the time we left the hotel until I was about a mile from home. I had no issues. Granted I didn't look in the air box, but she ran like a champ the entire ride down. I wonder why your bike bogged down where mine didn't. Strange
Learning from my mistakes... again and again.
