I've got a 2004 Bonneville America with 26k on the clock. On the way home from work yesterday the motor suddenly died. It restarted ok, but then died again soon after. This happened 4 times on my 3km trip home. Had plenty of petrol and the suddenness of the cutout makes me think electrics. Has anyone got any ideas?

Mine did that continuously over the summer, to the point of it being dangerous for me (stopped on the crowded interstate, etc.). I resolved it by putting on a new set of sparkplug wires. I think one of my leads to the coils was loose. I tightened the OEM ones up, didn't have an issue (but didn't get to ride it a lot), than swapped out the wires for a set of new NGK's from Brent. Hasn't happened since.

Also, check the tank vent hose for kinks or blockage at the tip as this presents the same problem.

Having read a lot of these sites, it seems prudent to me to check the kickstand switch.

Thanks guys. I will check those out. I had another thought too. Some of the paint has peeled off from the inside of where the petrol cap fits. I'm wondering if that's blocking the filter. I'll give you a progress report when I've got it sorted. Cheers

Well, I found a piece of soldering wire (it was the only thing I could find soft enough to go round the bend)and poked it down the breather pipe and haven't had any problems since, so full marks to Old Roadie!

The only thing that's kept me off the beast lately is gout in my left wrist. Not nice!! Managed to get back on the bike today and took it out for a decent spin. Love that bike!!

If your problem comes back and none of the above advise workds, replace your sender switch that's bahind the alternater cover. Although it can be tested with an ohm meter at the connection under your seat, that test isn't trustworthy as the switch can go out intermitantly when the bike is pulling a load. That little bugger ruined my trip to Fla. last year.
