I took a long ride in the rain yesterday, and on the way home my engine kept stalling. If I let it sit for a couple minutes and choked it, the bike would start. I could ride half a mile or so and it would stall again. To get home I repeated this cycle for about five miles.

The bike seems fine today.

I have 1K miles on it and so far no problems. But this is the first extended ride in the rain.

Any ideas? Are there known problems with rain? Thanks.

John

Some have had problems with the kick stand kill switch getting wet and stalling the bike as well. Most just sealed it with an epoxy and that solved the problem.

but would letting it sit for a couple of minutes cure either of those things? What about the famous gas cap vent issue? In any event, there shouldn't be anything stalling the bike that isn't a warranty issue or a finger problem - hit the dealer.

Bill, what's the famous "gap cap vent issue"? A forums search turned up nothing. I did switch to reserve and then fill up just before the problem started.

I'll take it for servicing, but it runs fine now.

I just had issues with that the other week. When it stalls out like that, crack open the gas cap a few turns to open up (or "blow out") the vent. That vent tube that you see when the cap is off is connected to a tube that runs all the way down to near the bottom of the motor.
I was given the advice to cut the tip of that tube off at a diagonal so the point faces front (or the hole faces back), so it can't clog up from road water/wet debris.
So far I haven't had any more problems in the rain.

When I was having trouble with my kick stand switch, letting it sit for a "few minutes" didn't help......it needed to sit for hours!....before discovering the problem in the switch, I took all connections apart for treatment with dielectric grease, but found them all clean, greased, and dry...I don't see how a faulty cap vent would only cause trouble in the rain, but anything's possible....a simple test for this would be trying to run it with the cap loose...

If the vent tube is blocked, no gas will pass eventually. It's a gravity feed system.

Just not with a full tank...
