From Harry's post about his bathroom project, I thought I'd show you the bathroom project we completed before the family room. Two things about these projects.

1. When the wife says "Maybe we should remodel the bathroom?", run away, cripple yourself, or join the Merchant Marines
2. If you violated #1, then keep it as simple as possible while maintaing a good look

So here's a few shots in various stages. I don't have any of the fully completed room but it is done!

Floor & walls - remember #2 above? I threw that one right over the back fence! You are seeing a waterproofing method made by The Schluter Company. Great product but not the easiest to install. Also note the river stone floor. That was SO fun and easy to install!



So once we got going on this project, I thought "How about an inset shelf? How cool would that be?" I was beating #2 senseless right now... However, I did find a pre-fabbed inset shelf that looked pretty easy to install (installing it was VERY easy but tiling it......).



Here's a closer look at inset and a closer look at the Schulter stuff. Those orange 'squares' are actually dovetailed back into the plastic to rock solid hold the mortar (and tile). Note the floor rocks. They are held together with a membrane which made it a lot easier to install. I was actually entertaining the idea of using them to do the inset shelf. Thank God I came to my senses!



Tiling.... only for the masochist! Inset shelf is partially done. Note the tape to hold the upper pieces and the metal piece (for a shelf). It took me almost two days just to cut all those little pieces and get them up! WAY too much work!



Here's the inset all done with the shelf tiled too. I used a marine grade epoxy instead of thinset for this and clamped them.

Phil, I feel your pain, I'm in the middle of a bathroom renovation here too.
I've sworn to the wife, this is the last big job I do. These DIY jobs cut into my riding time!

You should have a Shower Party now . We'll all come over and we'll supply the bath gel .

Great job. I have a question for you. I have used the schluter uncoupling membrane as you showed on the walls for sub-flooring instead of concrete backer board and it worked great for that. I am getting ready to complete a shower and was looking at this...

Any reason you used the uncoupling membrane on the walls instead of the Kerdi waterproofing membrane as they show in the shower kits?

Steve, I couldn't use the shower kit system but wished I could. Check the specs on the kits. They have set dimensions for the drain locations and if yours falls outside of those dimensions, you cannot use their kits. Of course, mine was not even close... Those shower systems are 'da bomb' though. Waterproof, not having to slope, no pan, able to use a square drain. Sigh......

I could not readily get the 'regular' waterproofing membrane at a reasonable price but could get the uncoupling version locally. The whole thing including the banding was right at $200 and the shower is now completely waterproof. That benefit alone was worth the extra expense.

WELL, at least I didn't offer to get in the shower with you and all the other guys here like Bucky did!(a mental picture that I am trying to scratch out of my head right now with an icepick, thanks!)

Eons ago in a land locked in time I endeavored to enamour my wife.

Awesome job Phil! I've had dreams (nightmares?) of taking a month off and flipping a house or something. Or maybe I just watch too much HGTV. I have a couple projects I want to do around the house, but since we're still renting they are all "free standing" projects so to speak. I'll have to get some pics of the pot-rack I made recently online.

Well here's the pot rack I installed.



I didn't want to drill holes, and I was worried about it pulling out of the wall anyway. So I made it from 3/4 poplar plywood I had leftover from another project. The pannel that hides the fridge is actually 5/8 ply, and there is a gap between it and the upper cabinet. So I just made it hang on that! Even had room for some felt pads to protect the paint. You can see from the in process pics...

I still need to trim it out, but I can do that with the pans hanging from it Maybe some day I'll paint it... but the natural wood looks nice.

Here's another one I made for my tool boxes. It's getting replaced by a wedding present soon! A new Stanley/Vidmar cabinet!

Great projects EVERYONE. I am in the middle of a HUGE remodel right now. Kitchen is totally torn out....Waiting on the cabinets now. Putting in reclaimed heart pine flooring (came out of a 150 yr old mill). Redoing master bedroom and bathroom. I am going to use the Schluter shower kit on it and tile the entire thing.

The funny part of this story is the wife kinda set me up to do this.

I was gripping about my truck and the gas mileage (I travel alot for work). She says...why dont I take some extra money I have saved up and pay it off. Then we can get you a car with good mileage. A week later I was driving a Toyota Prius and getting almost 50 MPG.

About a month later I asked where is the bill for my motorcycle payment...I know its due soon. She says....Dont worry about it. I got a small bonus at work an paid it off.

Next month.........HOME EQUITY LOAN and TOTAL REMODEL. I should have seen it coming. Good thing is that I hired a contractor to do all the grunt work....tear out some walls....remove the carpet....etc. I get to do the finishe work which is alot more fun.

Looking back....I should have seen it coming....But gotta love a wife who will pay off your bike

We decided to do room by room. That way the house wasn't in too much of a disarray. Here's the kitchen (done about 5 years ago. That island was hand built by yours truly and yes, that's proud papa in the last one!

Currently I'm working on my pole barn - taking out two 8x8 garage doors and putting in a 16x8 door. Had to install three 20ft LVL header beams, take out two 4x6 posts and install two 6x6 laminate posts, all on the load bearing wall. It's all finished except for some sheet metal work - had to be ordered. Would post a few pics, but my photographer took the kids out all weekend to keep them outta the way. I've got about 35 hours into it so far, along with the help of two others. Heavy project and learned a lot.

Next is the bathrooms, but those are going to wait a little while - I refuse to do indoor projects when its nice out.

Well I'm building walls upstairs.

Lets see in 3 years we have 1 out of the 4 required.
Guess I better get cracking she will be crawling in 6 months.

Now that the Mrs and I are empty nesters. One son in Iraq not likely to be home for a year or so, other son moved to the "Sunshine State". We've decided to install a bar in the area that used to be my computer desk/living room office area. Anyone have any sugjestions where I cuold steal some plans or Ideas from?

Got around to one of those little annoying things I've been meaning to get to.

A friend of ours brought us a really nice wooden corner TV cabinet for a wedding present. (his parents were tossing it!!) Anyway, fits the TV and the room perfectly. But said room is a little not level (old house) so the left side doors wouldn't stay put. So I drilled a couple shallow 1/2" holes with a forstner, and epoxied these tiny little magnets that I got from work. These suckers are STRONG! Must be rare earth magnets... Anyway, I positioned them so they grab the hinges when they are closed. Not bad for a half hours work, most of which was removing and re-mounting the doors!!

Hey Dwight, I really hate to pick on otherwise very nice work, but that rightmost Minaret is about .8 degrees off plumb Dude! Look what that's done for the Italians, always having to shove sand and gravel under their Tower....

Yeah Greg, but if that tower didn't lean there in Pisa, Galliano would'a never found the reason why two different sized glasses of Harvey Wallbangers drop at the same speed, dude!!!
