I've bought an '06 Bonneville America from a dealer some distance
away. They were getting ready to ship it to me, but when they started
it up they heard some kind of noise at the top of the engine. The
dealer couldn't desribe it, said it wasn't something he was familiar
with. They called Triumph, and the dealer said they seemed to know
right off what the problem is. Bike's under warranty, and they've
taken it to their local Triumph dealer for repair. In the mean time,
the guy offered me a full refund, or I can wait another week until
their next shipping date.

Anybody got a clue what this might be? Is there some known, common
problem with these engines, and if so is there a fix that is permanent?

They are noisy engines by nature, at first it bothered me, now with the louder exhaust I still hear noise at idle, but thats it, I am getting used to it, not sure why yours is loud, could be its normal loud, good luck

These engines are normally on the noisey side - like a loud sewing machine! Can be alarming to the untrained ear. You'll get used to it.

But if the dealer is making a repair- it must have an unusual noise and I would want to know what the repair was. How many miles are on it? Talk to the dealer and let us know.

Thanks for the quick replies!

The bike has 13,500 miles on it. The place I'm getting it from is a BMW dealer who took it on trade. He says it wasn't making this noise when they got it, which seems odd to me. I wouldn't think something could happen with it just sitting there. But apparently his service manager agrees that it's a concern.

edit: Called them back for more info. Apparently the Triumph service guys feel there is a problem. The dealer said it sounded like a metal-on-metal ping.

I love the sound of a Triumph America and Speedmaster, no other bike manufacture makes it sound better!

I don't think it's the normal sound of the engine he is talking about or a dealer wouldn't have taken it in for service.

My two cents........take the refund and go to a different shop....I would be afraid there would be more problems down the road. A new bike with no miles etc and a problem before it has even been ridden........RUN
