Hey folks.. just wondering if anyone who has the sissy bar (either one) with the rack on can tell me if the rack's removable? Reason is I find myself needing the backrest but can't afford the whole thing - wondering if I can buy the rack later and just bolt it on?

Yes, the rack is removable, and Triumph does sell the sissy bar by itself. The trouble with buying the luggage rack later on is that they only sell it with the support arms...which the sissy bar comes with. So you'd end up with two sets of support arms if you go with your plan. Seeing how Triumph wants $200 for the rack with support arms, I think it's worth it to buy the whole package at the same time which is about $50 or so cheaper. Fortunately I got lucky and grabbed a used rack off of another member for $100. I didn't realize when I bought my sissy bar that I'd need the rack if I wanted to mount a large tail bag.

Hmm kinda figured that'd be the case. I know you can get the side mounts for the sissybar/rack as a spare part even though they're not listed in the catalogue as one of the members bought them and made his own sissybar & rack. (Same as the bar from the lightbar kit which I bought then added aftermarket lights etc) I'm hoping I can get just the rack as a spare at a later date... if not I'll make my own I reckon. Hmm mental note: learn to weld...

I'd like to make my own sissy bar also as the ones Triumph makes are too tall (even the short one) You wouldn't happen to have a part number on the brackets only????

Just pulled my rack off, saving for occasional use/touring bag. I have the tall sissy-bar, with my bag the rack isn't of much use. The bag is mounted with two well-nuts and I can have it off and the rack on in about 5 minutes.

Tall bar? Short bar? Anybody not satisfied with the one they have? Thoughts / opinions about the height?
Does the shorter bar limit your options on t-bags, etc.?

Nope, but it was member Babboon who made himself a (very tidy looking) rack using the OEM mounts, so he'd be the man to email.

Demoman,
I just went out to the shed and found the packaging for the left hand bracket. The part no is A9733466 and is described as " Mounting Plate LH ". Sorry man, I dont know what happened to the packaging for the right hand bracket but at least you got a starting point when you go to your dealer with that part no. Here are some pics of the sissy I made.

Shagga, If you are looking for bags that look right on a America I dont think you can go past these K Drive bags I have. I have had them about 6 months. They been to the Gold Coast and back last week and they went to Eden and back In the pouring rain over christmas and are still like new. They come with brackets and are a click on/click off system. I got them at Tom Byrne Motor Cycles at St Peters in Sydney. A little pricey at $ 600.00 But are really worth every cent. [/image] You can see the bracket in this pic. They look ok without the bags on.

Heya.. I've been looking at those Kdrive bags in the magazines etc - very nice bags if a bit expensive. Every time I enquired I was told they didn't make them for the America/SM's... what sort of bike were yours made to fit?
Hmm maybe I shouldn't have bothered ordering the Drifter Jumbos... then again they only cost me 1/3 as much. Oh well...

Thanks Baboon, The K-Drives look good. They look like a decent sized bag too. Trouble is, I just got some Easy Brackets off Brent so I am now looking for bolt on bags. Just Cruisers in Sydney have Jumbo Saddlemen Slant Drifters for $364.00. But I am not sure weather the Large or Jumbo size would suit the bike better.

www.CruiserCustomizing.com have the Jumbos on special for US$139.95... I ordered them a few days ago and with shipping they worked out to US$167.94 to Aust, or roughly AU$210. Oh and the jumbos look great on Americas and you can fit a dozen stubbies in each one. *grin*

G'day Matt, Thanks for that info. When your Drifters arrive, tell me what you think of them and any shipping problems etc. Looks like you found a bargain, eh? I found some nice leather bags by an outfit in Perth (kazzmazz.com.au - Longhaul Mk1 Saddlebags A$455.00), but I am still not convinced that leather is the way to go - not only on price, but how they will stand the test of time. If the $200 bags only last 2 years, who cares? But if the >$500 bags only last 2 years.......

Will do Yah, mailing lists come in useful occasionally. If you're looking at getting a set at that price the special's only on till the end of feb.

Yah, I had a look at them a while ago... the quality looks really good but as you alluded they require oiling and maintenance and will inevitably end up looking tired and sagging. I also wanted large slant bags, as I've been using a set of square-ish bags for about a year now and they simply weren't big enough. The drifters seem to fit nicely between the shocks and the rear blinkers, and if they weather the way my old bags (also synthetic leather) did they should last for ages. A quick wipe over with armourall occasionally keeps them looking good.

Baboon,
Those K Drive bags look pretty neat. Please correct me if I'm wrong but I take it the attachments that hook up onto the brackets are already built-in? I'm pretty interested, is there any specific model I should be looking out for? Also I take it that the price you mentioned is in Australian dollars right?

I agree, It might be better to bite the bullet and buy the rack and bar at the same time and save some money. I personally like the short sissy bar.

I think quite a few have Saddlemen Slant Drifter Jumbos. After W&M compact slants (look good on a Speedie but waaaay too small for an America), it seemed you just couldn't get big enough, and big looks good on an America... to a point. Just got the latest Dennis Kirk and saw that Saddlemen has not only regular and jumbo, but now have Extra Jumbo, and Extra Extra Jumbo! There's a fellow at work who rides a little Suzuki cruiser with the regulars and it looks a little too small even on his. The jumbos look just right, although I'd like to see the Extra Jumbos up close. Those Extra Extras look really big in the catalog... I think maybe too big!

Bedouin, check out the Kdrive bags at K Drive. They have since added a recomended bag with mountings for our bikes but at the time I had to buy a set for a Harly Dyna Glide. The Harley brackets fit our bikes perfectly, and I remounted the clicklok system on the back of the bag to get them to sit where i wanted them. A fairly easy mod overall.
