Love bug season has peaked. They are stuck on my car, truck, and bike. Yesterday, I rode for just awhile and had them all over me. I didn't have a face shield either. I'm curious as to how much protein I took in.

Yum, Yum!
Sounds like you were riding around with your mouth wide open.

Just make sure you wash the bugs off immediately, otherwise their "protein" will eat through your paint. Don't ask me how I know.

do you guys mean the ladybugs? They have nested in my house the last couple years I think since I find a large concentration near the light in one of the rooms each year. These are not the ladybugs we remember as kids these will actually bite you. The gov't imported them to control some sort of aphid if I remember right. They drop(ed) them from planes.

I didn't know about them eating paint though, thats good to know to prevent an expensive paint job.

A LOVE BUG be this : Plecia nearctica , an insect indigenous to Central America , and been migrating ( illegally ) northward for years . They like it in South Florida especially. I think they have problems with depression and congregate ENNE MASSE on highways hoping to be dispatched by speeding CARS and MOTORCYCLES . Their posthumus revenge - the SPLATTERED bodies are ACIDIC and will compromise your nice paint if you don't GIT them OFF soon . That is all I have to say about that .

Yesterday was the 3rd annual "Love Bug Run", held here in N. Central Florida. It's a modified poker run where you not only get a poker hand, but you get a 'bulls eye' target that you slap on the front of your bike. At the end of the run, the person with the most love bugs in the center of the target wins the grand prize. I guess if you have to live with them, you might as well make the most of it

Cheers,
Brad

From Wickedpedia:

"Upon reaching maturity the love bug spends the entirety of its life copulating with its mate, hence its numerous romantic nicknames. The male and female attach themselves at the rear of the abdomen and remain that way at all times, even in flight. In fact, after mating, the male dies and is dragged around by the female until she lays her eggs."

Glad we don't have 'em here. The few weeks of cicadas in the summer are enough

Most runs up this way you get one of those targets for a prize.
Thanx I had no idea what a Love Bug was except maybe a lady bug and now I know not.

They swarm in masses in NW FL and lower AL as well. Mid Sept. is about peak season in this area for them. I ended up with about a 100K of them on my boat the weekend of the 15th in Perdido Bay, AL. They are really attracted to white, like my boat. Masses of them can get trapped in dead wind areas.

Riding on your bike or car near water (where the eggs hatch) you might hit a mass of them which can really make a mess that's not easy to get off.

rhe week after hurricane katrina [2005] there were zillions everywhere, i later found out on "discovery" channel tyey blew in from the swamps to south. [plenty of them]we are having a tropical depression remnant right now, lots worse today than yesterday, guess i'll shut down for a week or so, they really are miserable to deal with. when they dry ,VERY DIFFICULT TO REMOVE!!!!!

some people are like slinkies, they serve no purpose, but, they bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.

Wax is acid resistant. A good coat of wax will help save your paint. If they dry, don't rub them off, soak them off with a wet towel.
