In the heat of the posting , I realized that I was participating in hijacking singring's Cheap Effective Oil Filter Protector thread.

So......

After seeing the Norman Hyde skid plate for the Bonneville class machines (thanks Travis!)

I seriously started thing about making one. After re-mounting my new rear tire tonight, I left her on the jack so I could create a cardboard template. Got on the garage floor and 'started creating'.....

Janet comes out and goes "how would you change the oil?"

Crap....

I did realize why I love this woman so it's not a total loss!

Back to thinking..........

I've had the same idea since the post where an old brake pad took out someones filter. I was waiting until this winter to fit mine. I got a hold of some stainless at work about a month ago? Just need time to tinker.

When I read the post first thing I thougt about was a skid plate but wasn't sure about the access issue. Keep us updated and hopefully a pic or two.

Put a hinge right across the middle of the curved part, two quick-release fasteners at the back, and line it with a thin strip of rubber so it doesn't rattle.

Brian's idea has real merit guys. Sure, it may be too much stuffing around for some but once built and fitted, what a top notch addition to our bike's ridability ie. dirt road riding less of a concern. I like the idea

I like Brian's idea also, John. So far, the best one!

btw, a skid plate would not be for off road only. We ride through so much road crap down here, you might as well be off roading!
