Too many references these past few days. I just had to know. Seems bloody well fitting we Yanks drop that 'Limey' thing and realize our Brit brothers are no longer concerned with stowing enough fruit 'board ship to ward of the rickets - The important thing these days is to be sure to eat your bloody jaffa - All flavors, all shapes, all sizes. Bloody well, chaps - Great day to ya and enjoy your sponge cakes. http://www.answers.com/topic/jaffa-cake

Well jeez, that's good to know. Sounds like chocolate covered twinkies with orange marmelade inside instead of the whipped cream filling, chock full of preservatives of course.

Soooo... you're saying it's inappropriate to call them "Limeys," so we should call them "Jaffas"? At the very least "Limey" has a great deal of historical value (like Yankee)... I mean, I dunno -- I guess I'd like all the Brits out there to give their input: which would you prefer, "Limey" or "Jaffa?" I don't expect anyone will stop calling us "Yankees" anytime soon (nor would I want or expect them to), but it seems reasonable to at least inquire as to what (semi derogatory) term they'd prefer to be called! As a Yank with a number of Limey friends, I'm rather fond of calling them all "Limey Bastards"; it rolls off the tongue, much as "Yankee Barbarian" or "Yankee Swine" (as they are fond of calling me, I can't imagine why...) Hehehehe. Rock the hell on, y'all, Yankee and Limey alike. --Jaeger

Jaffa,.... Wasn't he the senior doctor on the old "Ben Casey" television show??? Or is it Jaffa the Hut from Star Wars I'm thinking of...? Or the "Jaffa Jive", an old Ink Spots tune.... The phrase "Limey Twinkies" brings the names Elton John, George Michael, and Boy George to mind....

Personally I don't mind being called Limey ... don't know about everyone else.
Looks like I've opened a whole new taste delight to the colonies ...

Well I don't know about the others, but if I had to choose, I would go for Limey. My reason for this? In southern England, if you call someone a Jaffa you are inferring that they are "seedless" (ie infertile/firing blanks/running on unleaded etc)

I'm with Adey and Nobby on this one Limey's is fine, but a bit concerned with the addition of "twinkies" (Grump) because I tend to fall off at roundabouts whilst driving with left hand firmly on left hip....... and elbow stuck out. Mike

If you're living in England, then yes, of course you're English. Duh. I have, however, in my younger, even dumber years, made the mistake of calling a Scotsman an Englishman.
He started screaming something unintelligible about making me into a haggis.
But to call everybody who lives on those islands west of France 'United Kingomers' doesn't really work, so "Brits" ye be. It's easier (and safer) than trying to guess their origin (particularly to those of us who can't always discern between, say, a think North Yorkshire accent and a Scottish accent -- maybe you folks can tell, but I sure can't).
As for the "Limey" debate -- I did ask my friend Sabine (lives in Greenwich) whether "Limey" was actually derogatory, and he said "no, I don't think so."
I'm aware that somewhere along the line "Yankee" went from insulting to not, and I suspect this is the same. (Honestly, I'm still trying ot figure out where the term 'Yankee' came from, other than the stupid song.)
Anyway, so calling someone a Jaffa is calling them a limp-dick, eh? Haha. Good to know.
So are Jaffas similar to McVies?

Oh yeah, refer to an Englishman as British, and you are in for a world of hurt.
There is only one proper flag of England and that is the flag of St. George!

Heh, yeah, good point -- especially since I'm currently in Virginia, "The Old Dominion" State (Commonwealth, actually).
Where I am (near DC) is pretty northern, but you don't have to venture too far west or north to see lots of Confederate flags. US Civil War reenactment is pretty big around here, and there are plenty of "Johnny Rebs."
As far as "British," though -- how is it INCORRECT to call an Englishman a Brit? England is part of Great Britain, not the other way around. It is also technically correct to call a Welshman a Brit, though he might get a little ruffled about it. To call a Welshman an Englishman is not only incorrect, but it's enough to get you killed, depending on how deep into the Land of CYMRU...YDDQMPRRRZ (or however it's spelled) you are.
(I'm not trying to be a wiseacre here -- if I'm off base here, would one of the kind folks from the UK, whatever the hell you're called, please correct me?)

It's not necessarily wrong to call an Englishman a Brit. Depends on the bloke involved. I'm an Englishman first and a Brit a distant second. Just for a laugh, call any Welshmen or Scotsman a 'Brit' Light the blue touch paper and retire to a safe distance ...

Moe-- Old Dominion? It rocks! The brewery isn't too far from where I live, and they had their big brewfest this past weekend (alas, I could not attend). If you're an IPA fan, check out their "Hop Pockets Ale." Good schtuff. --Jaeger

The first time I heard that it was Del Boy on Only Fools and Horses (talking about Boycey). IIRC it was a reference to seedless Jaffa oranges. That programme must have left us with a load of phrases. My favourite is "Triggers Broom" - "I've had this broom for 20 years. It's had 12 new handles and 23 new heads". Still a classic
And if anyone is really interested there's a few explanations of Yankee on this site:

Hey JCBullen, You are pullin my plonker aren't you? You knew it was Raby Burns really - talkin about a louse on a posh womans hat. Seemed to have a thing about insects and wee beasties did Raby. Now he was British - but definately not English. Did you know the Scotts were originally a tribe from Ireland? I swear its true

Hiya Simon John Cheese? I prefer Yankie As for Trigger - bloody classic mate. Loved that scene with the broom. I think he's good in the vicar of Dibley too. I know his surname is Lloyd-Pack : is his first name John? Too many good moments in OF&H : Grandad undoing the wrong nut on the chandalier, Del falling through the bar opening and saying Trigger was cramping his style, Trigger saying the baby was named " .. Rodney, after Dave .." PS: What does IIRC stand for?? Me being a bit thick ..

Hey Adey, They all ways go together dont they - the Picts AND Scotts. I believe that before the scots moved in - North of Adrians wall they were Caledonians - getting at the limits of my history knowledge there though so not putting any money on it. Would have to cheat and Google it to find more.

Adey --
As far as "lighting the blue touch paper" and calling the Scots/Welch "British," OOOOOOOH no.
Well, technically they ARE British, whether they like it or not (and yes, I'm quite aware that most of 'em don't), but... It's curious, once upon a time America was very similar -- e.g., a Virginian first and an American second -- but any more it doesn't work that way. I'm still not sure if that's a good thing or not. *shrug*
Anyway, thanks for the clarification!

If I Remember Correctly - sorry, too much time spent on internet forums My kids discovered OF&H a few months ago (repeats on one of the digital channels), and it's still a cracking programme. Anyway, I'm off now - this is going to sound really sad, but you know that Big Brother programme? Well I can honestly say I've not watched more than an hour of the last 5 series in total. But this year I've got hooked on it, and it's just about to start. In my defence I do spend most of the hour it's on for swearing at the TV How's the move going, and when's the house warming (Don't expect a reply until tomorrow night. I need to be in Milton Keynes at 9am tomorrow, so as soon as BB's finished I'll be hitting the sack!)

Well you'll get your reply tonight anyway ..
BB?? BB??
I'm watching too - sad twats or what?
My PC is in the living room so I get to surf and watch it.
As for the move .. things are moving on quickly ...
Three people viewed the house yesterday (Tuesday) and two of 'em want it.
The last person (absolutely lovely woman but mad as a bag of hammers!!) was at the agents first thing to put dibs on it.
The agent has now gone from:
" .. sorry Mr Lloyd but you're contracted 'til 22 August .. " to
" .. we're now waiting for you to give us a move out date so that we can proceed .. "
Like I'm holding everything up!!!
Anywho, the house I'm moving to was, I'm told, vacated on Monday of this week.
My mate, who owns it, comes back from his villa in Spain on Friday so, as of Monday, I can officially start moving in.
All things being equal, I could be in by 22 July - when the other people could take over the tenancy of this place ..
As for the party, you'll have to ring to doorbell with your elbow ... 'cause you'll all have your hands full, yeah???

Alright! Alright! Here's something that I could NEVER figure out. You're from Thailand.....You're Thai! You're from Scotland.....You're a Scot! You're from Finland......You're a Finn! So why then are we even debating this "Limey/Brit/Jaffa" thing?! You guys should be...."ENG"s! RIGHT?!!! Oh, and, regarding the "Yankie" term.....It WAS originally derogatory. The British, or should I say "Engs" Redcoats(soldiers) in the colonies would sing the popular "drinking song" about the colonists who wanted to break from the Crown, inferring that they were a bit daft. I guess they turned out to be not as daft as they thought, huh? Oh, and one other note: As Greybeard alluded to, I wouldn't ever call a native Mississippian or a Texan...a YANKIE to his face. You'd probably end up getting the same response that Jaeger received when he called MacDonaldson, or whatever his name was, a BRIT, for God sake! Dwight
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

As a second generation half/Scot and a friend of an old Welshman, I assure you that to be a fact! There ain't much love for the Empire.
I can imagine my ancestors spinning in their caskets everytime I see prince chuckie in his kilt. I do hope everyone knows I started all this in fun and with the deepest respect for whom I consider our Brit - er, ENGLISH brothers. I think we Yanks have managed to get over the centuries of oppression and unjust taxation to the point we can get on with life with just one celebration per year. And I suppose a lot of that is due to the Brits themselves who have been loyal friends and allies down through history. Bless you all mates - just keep your jaffa, as well as your tea out of Boston Harbor. Now, with that all said - we can continue this meaningless banter...

Well then.... My mother was English and my father was Irish. My wife is either Dutch, French, or German,... and Irish. Those in the family who worry about these things haven't figured it out yet. According to a recent ongoing study, we're all either descended from Ghengis Khan or Thomas Jefferson, who themselves were descendants of some half-monkey man from either Africa or the Tigris-Euphrates (Iraq) area.... So call me a yankee or call me Spanky, just don't stand between me and my beer refrigerator.....

Yep, that would also most assuredly apply here in South Carolina. The term Yankee is almost always derogatory, and is now most often used in reference to all the people who are moving here, who ain't from here.
As for the heritage of most in the old "backcountry" of the Carolinas, it is drilled into our wee heads from birth that we are all of Scots-Irish descent, and we are not allowed to forget it.

Hey pipedr ".. I do hope everyone knows I started all this in fun .." What else? In GENERAL, we have thick enough skin and broad enough shoulders to spot a bit of ball bustin' .. We, in England, ( ) know there aren't many countries out there that like the 'Empire'. But you've gotta admit, for a while there we had it covered, eh? What was it, 1/2 or 2/3 of the globe, or something? From this little island .. not too bad ...... As for CONTINUING with meaningless banter, when did we stop ??
