First, I wanna make something real clear. I haven't been drunk since 1983.

Having said that, I do enjoy red wine in the evening hours (especially now that I'm a BMW snob). Anyway, I found a Cabernet Sauvignon that is very good - and it's only $8.99. In fact, after tasting it I was flabbergasted at the price. It comes from Concannon Winery.

Just thought I'd pass along what I think is a good deal.

I hate being drunk, i do enjoy a glass of something or other once in a while. Here is what has been one of my favorite wines for that last couple of years Hogue Merlo. They are in the Yakima valley.

I was given a bottle of Ice Wine from a Canadian relative visiting me this week, never knew of the stuff, Quite interesting and I am liking it alot.
Expensive too but he makes his own.

I have no problem with French wine. It's some of the best ever made.

However you direct your bias, it will always keep you on the losing end of the bargain.

Personally, I'll drink just about anything, as long as it's upper shelf. Life's too short to drink the cheap stuff.

I do have different drinks for different occasions. I like getting buzzed, but I don't like to be hung over.

Aussie wine mainly, Fav being Orange Muscat and Flora. Ridiculously sweet, but I like that.

Got a bottle of Aussie Reisling open and drinking it now...

I dont know anything about wine, other then "A Good Wine" is one that i like the taste of, and a "Bad Wine" is one that i dont. And i will try all kinds, regardless of what part of the world they come form.

I am also partial to a drop of Port.

Im a fan of reds...can’t say I’m a snob or even a connoisseur BUT I can say that drinking wine out of the right glass makes a world of difference! Reidel all the way

Nothing wrong with a good brew or a stiff drink either.

I understand Washington state is making a name for itself regarding vinyards & subsequent fermentation processes. I toured through the Tri-Cities area a few years ago and saw many grapes being grown

Ice wine is like ice beer. It's a little stronger because they chill it until it has some ice crystals, then filter those out. The remaining wine has more alcohol.

Just a correction on the Ice Wine. They don't chill the wine they pick the grapes on a cold morning when they have become frozen completely. The wine is then pressed from those grapes.

This process increases the sugar of the grape but greatly reduces the juice content you would normally get, hence the greater expense for this type of wine.

Ice wine is meant as a dessert wine and way too sweet for my liking.

I opened a Kendall Jackson Savagnoin Blanc.....Sauvignon Blanc....(who said I could spell, had to go get the bottle to look) not bad

A new fav is Knarly Head Zin. For a $10-12 bottle, VERRRRY smooth. Zinfandels tend to be strong reds, but this is very velvety and with a nice finish!!!!

I'm getting tired of the Merlots and Chardoney's. Tho I do like the Toasted Head Chard - buttery is the best description.

Not sure this bottle of Sav Blanc will last till tomorrow!

Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio ....Yummmy....here its in the $20+ catagory, and some days thats just too rich for my blood. Our Safeway has the Knarly Head....I think thats the name...I drank it all!!!! So don't have bottle to look at!

Coteaux De Layon is a very sweet dessert wine if you like that sort of thing. While my wife was away in France last month I treated myself to a bottle given to me as a present... 1989 Fronsac.... it was lovely, blackcurrenty, woody n' all that hype. I am far from a wine snob because I love some of the bargain basement stuff too... you can get a cracking rose/red around here for £2 a bottle

Love that stuff...just haven't found it locally, have to go a 100 miles or so to the most local Cost Plus in north Phx. (but supposedly we will get a Cost Plus next hear - we'll see.)

Jamesons a bit to fiery for me... I stayed with a relative over in Belfast one year... I made the mistake of trying to keep up with what he drank, he was drinking Bass lager and I was on the Guinness... lets just say 1hr 20mins and 7 pints later I was put off the treacle for loyf... to be sure.

I love a car bomb!
Also came up with what I called the "Protestant Car Bomb" - pint of Strongbow with a shot of cinnamon schnapps dropped into it.

On the wine thing...my personal preference is a Western Cape red. Not usually a huge fan of white, but I do enjoy a nice Rhine spatletze ("late harvest", from the end of the season when the grapes have more sugar)

Of course all this wine speculation (region, type of grapes, and so on) far more depends on the weather conditions of a given season. But, There are certain regions that are more consistant than others as far as the grapes they produce year after year. And southeastern Washington has become one of those very consistant regions. I have heard that Walla Walla, Washington has become known far and wide among the worlds most distinguished wine aficionandos. Especially with Syrah (which happens to be the same grape as the Australian Shiraz).

But the best Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris comes from the Willamatte Valley in Oregon.

I always thought the grape was picked of the vine when it was frozen, this means picking it at unearthly hours, thats why ice wine costs so much.

My bad. I thought ice wine was the same as fortified wine.

Little known fact. At one time France had most of their vineyards infested with a desease that nearly wiped them out. They were saved by taking stock from California that was resistant to the desease and replanting. So much of France's wine has a Californian in the woodshed. I guess if we go farther back California wines have French vines in their linage. What comes around, goes around.

If you're talking about the late 1800's and early 1900's, this is when Absinthe achieved it's popularity. It replaced wine as France's popular liquor.

Once the harvests came back, wine wasn't selling like it used to due to the high absinthe sales. It then was the wine industry who started the rumors of absinthe's hallucinogenic & highly addictive properties. Based on these rumors, most countries labeled absinthe as an illegal drug and banned it.

Yes, I checked it out on the net, and was also told that its is harvested at the end of the season as winter takes hold and that the grapes have to be picked frozen from the vine at about -8 deg C any warmer and they are not frozen, any colder and they are to hard to press and can indeed break the press. so if you leave the grapes on the vine to long and winter takes a hold the entire years crop can be lost. It can also be manufactured artificaly by freezing grapes, but I think it cant be called Ice Wine then and is knowen as Ice box wine or some other similarity.

The only reason I know this is that some Ice Wines are make here in my region. Last year's crop was very poor since the proper temperature didn't arrive until very, very late in the season. Alot of grapes were lost because they stayed on the vine too long making last year's stock in short supply.

Our region is starting to produce some good stuff from what I am told and starting to become comparable with the Niagara Region wines. I'm not much for wine but do like a good Merlot or Chianti with a meal.

The popularity of absinthe is actually prior to the wine blight, like way back to Roman times...and although very popular it was also expensive, and considered and "elitist" indulgence...as the wine shortage began, distillers saw a need and "cheapened" their product and made it very affordable for all...it's "elitist mystique" combined with its lower price was enough to make it popular with the masses...never mind the wine shortage...its demise was well after the blight, caused more by the temperance movement than wine industry insiders...in-fact many Vintners were vehemently fighting against regulating it (Absinthe) for fear that they might be next... at its peak Absinthe only accounted for about 3-4% of the alcohol consumed in France...

The "Great Wine Blight" began in the mid 1860's and by the 1870's-80's they had already begun to feverishly graft phylloxera-resistant American rootstocks across the country, based upon the great successes they had in the previous years...
the banning of absinthe was still 30-40 years away...

It was the Belgium who first banned it, in 1905 quietly and with out fanfare and not the French...but the Swiss often take credit because of a very public debate spanned by a murder/suicide attempt in which the perp. (Lanfray) had [consumed five liters of wine, six glasses of cognac, one coffee laced with brandy, two crème de menthes, and two glasses of absinthe after eating a sandwich.]* He then went home had another Coffee and Brandy, then he shot up his wife and kids, then turned the gun upon himself...he was un-sucsessful in his suicide attempt and stood trial...

Due to the "rumors" in Europe and circulating around the world, they blamed the 2 little glasses of Absinthe not the gallon or so of alcohol...this was 1905. As a result of the trial and all its hub-bub the down fall of Absinthe began...it would be 5 more years before the Law banning Absinthe would go into effect in Switzerland …other countries would soon follow….

But again it was the Temperance Movement that started the ball rolling, not the Wine industry.

The problem is the Thujone a very real poison found in Absinthe it is a potent nerotoxin and can be very deadly...however it is in such small quantities that you would die from alcohol poisoning long before the Thujone would get you...but it is/has always been atributed to the "hallucinatory" effects (not true) of Absinthe so now producers are victims of their own false PR campaigns...kinda funny actually
