Hey fellas - Got about 6 miles down the road today and noticed my odometer had stopped ticking off miles and my speedo needle was on flat zero. It was working a few miles before that because I noticed it working when I filled up and got on down the road right after I left the house. It didn't jump around or exhibit any strange behavior as some others have reported, just...nothing.
Anyone have any thoughts? Likely to be the cable? The speedometer itself? All feedback appreciated.

I believe that there have been quite a few speedometer failures eary on but have not heard of any lately. I believe alot were replace under warranty. What year is your bike? I don't know if any were replaced out of warranty but might be worth checking on though. Good luck.

I've noticed lately when I back the bike out of the garage and paddle it forward that I get a clicking sound from my speedo. I don't remember it ever doing that before. I know there have been a few of you guys(gals) that have either busted a cable or speedo and I was wondering if there was any signs before that happened?

Not on mine. Working when I left for work, not working when I got there.

My bike is a 2002. No noise or "clicking" as some have reported, working when I left the house, not working when I got to my destination.

Sounds like most folks busted a cable. Anyone use anything besides an OEM cable to fix it?

The speedo broke on mine too... only it's not the Speedy, she's sitting up in Ohio waiting for me to cme and get her... whle I'm in Texas
The speedo cable broke on my "new to me" 1977 Holiday Rambler RV! <G> It was working when I left and broke about 100 miles later... course she' hadn't really gone anywhere for about ten years, so oh well! <LOL> Only problem is I hit a very bad pothole on a freeway onramp and busted a rear shock... now I know why I don't like to ride at night... at least on I 40 in Arkansas! At least I can hook up the GPS to the SM! The speedo is 4mph off anyway.... Mary

Tinman, it sounds like your problem is in the speedo head not the cable. If its warranted take it to the dealer and get them to listen to it. A new speedo is a bit over $300.00 I think.
I try to aggravate one person a day. Today may be your day.

I finally figured out that my trip meter was doing the add 100 miles thing after I'd swiped the speedo with the polishing rag! Took a few times for me to catch on....

But you know that's not what happening with Matt's bike Paula, there has never been a polishing rag any where near his speedo.

My tripometer would give me the best milage known I could go 400-500 miles before I would hit reserve...I mentioned it to the dealer and they fixed it...now my milage is crappy 130-150 before reserve...and they also somehow reset my odometer to all zeros at the same time...so mow I have a sticker that says +5108 below the new odometer...

It was the cable (finally got to look at it to see what was wrong)that broke. The speedo is probably fine, but I won't know until my new cable comes in next week and I hook it up. It broke about 2 inches from the speedo itself. Whew! That could have been a $300 problem, but a new cable is just $31.
