Iwould agree with most of what is in the report including the helmet stats.but i still wouldn,t wear one if i didn,t have to,if i need protection i,ll buy a rottwieler dog.Very interesting read all the same.you can be the most experienced rider in the world but your only as safe as the worst driver allows you to be.

Interesting read. With the huge increase in number of motorcycle riders in the past several years, I wonder if current statistics are similar to this report? - which is almost 25 years old.

Yeah Palmer, I wondered the same thing. I thought I would post it to show how familiar the various situations seem to be. I bet one change would be the displacement factor, that is , larger displacement bikes involved in more injury accidents. With the popularity of high powered sport bikes and inexperienced and/or show off riders on them, I think they would account for a higher percentage. Of course some of those are large displacement by 1981 standards.

Considering the availability of street motercycles in the 350 - 500 CC range as compared to the number of ones larger than 750, of course large displacement bikes are going to be over represented in current crash reports. The mix will currently favour big engines because it's hard to get anything under 750 and those seem to be deliberatly underpowered to get people to buy the big stuff.

The 600cc class repliracers are nothing to be toyed with. Over 100hp out of 600ccs.

But, on the other hand, the 650 Yama Davidson produces less power than their late 70's 400 vertical twin. And there just aren't many decent 350 - 500 "starter" or comuter bikes available anymore.
When I first started riding, there were a number of motorized bicycles and conversion kits for rich kids to get started on. For the rest of us who had to work and eventualy buy our bikes with what we earned, the market was full of used 275, 350 and 500 CC bikes. Some were castoffs from older rich kids, some were comuter bikes replaced by cars when the owner got a raise and some (a lot) were worn out dispatch or really old comuters. I was really lucky and got a nearly new one from a weekend warrior who couldn't get the hang of starting it.

I read where they tested kawasaki's 600cc sportbike in a bike mag a few weeks ago. It did a 10.3 second quarter mile.
Thats pretty impressive considering these things are not in any way designed to be quarter mile machines. If I'm not mistaken the rocket's quarter mile time is about 11.2 seconds.
Of course, ... my speedmaster is nicer than either one of them so it doesn't have to be fast.

That's exactly what I mean. There are 600's like that and the Daytona (which is also faster than the R3) mopeds and scooters, but there are very few decent 'training wheels' bikes around anymore. When the alternative is an offroad monster that you have to be over 8 feet tall to reach the ground, it's no wonder so many riders are in way over their head on their first bike.

Maybe it boils down to an ego thing.
Men are the majority of motorcycle buyers.
I think a lot of guys look at the smaller bikes as "womens bikes", and even though they haven't riden before, they want a big powerful machine.
They figure they will be cooler on it, even though its too much bike for them.
So then who is buying the smaller bikes? Well not many I guess. I can't remember the last time i saw anything smaller than a 600 in a dealers showroom.

I'll tell ya, it's really entertaining to spank some these guys on high-end sportbikes with a littel put-put bike (like a Honda VLX or so). They have all this power but can't apply it properly! Hehehe. They're hell in a straight line, but get 'em in traffic or the twisties and they get all puckered up. hehehe.
