So I go to Guitar Center in Marietta last Sunday, looking at the "line 6" 120 watt "Spider III" amp. The salesman approaches of course, and I told him I was interested, but had no money. "We can give you 6 months no payments, and no interest"..which I agreed to...and brought it home. MAN, one sweet amp for sure...it has 12 different amp types, 400+ presets, 2 celestion 10" speakers. I ran my ROCKMAN sustainer and chorus though it last night, and sounds exactly like Tom Scholz's gold top Les Paul...Blended with the "Third Stage" album, was getting shivers up my spine...very very happy with this amp...sweet sounds from the garage...

If it's like their other amps and the POD series of emulators it really comes alive when you hook a laptop up to it to tweak the settings.

Yes, but then you only have "that" sound target to work with. The Line 6 emulators give you a very broad sound pallet with extremely pleasing reults. And really, when it comes to guitar sounds, pleasing yourself is paramount.

If you want a Deluxe, get a Deluxe. If you want an AC-30, get an AC-30. But then again, I'm from the purist "plug right into the amp" school, and build my own amps which I use on stage.

Valvestate amps, aside from all other obvious problems, have a very fatal design flaw. With the way the preamp tubes & transformers are situated, the heat has no efficient way to escape. This results in a warped PC board & constant failure.

True enough but if you're doing covers that'd require a truck load of amps. You're luckt to be the kind of guitarist that has a "sound" and I admire that.
Many of the fellows I work with are stuck copping some studio cat's licks and have to reproduce a certain sound, the Line 6 and amps like it are perfect for that. That said, it will never be a Matchless Chieftan or a Deluxe or an AC30 or a Marshall slant front stack of greenback Celestions but it gets very close.

I fully agree...it all depends on what type of guit-box picker ya are...modelling amps just aren't my bag.

and I'm very opinionated when it comes to gear...being a part owner of a guitar shop for a handful of years and ex-pro doesn't do much to tone that down

I have to go with Mark on this. But, not all tube amps are created equal. Nothing beats the sound of the older Fender or Marshall amps to me. Some great boutique amps out there, but pricey. Most of the new Fenders and Mesas etc that i've played thru i don't care that much about. You can get a lot of different sounds thru a good tube amp if you have a decent pedal or two.
However, i wouldn't mind have a modeling amp or pod for messing around with for recording. For live work, i'm stuck in my ways i guess....well, i don't do much playing live anymore. Playing on the road and trying to deal with club owners and bandmates can do that to ya.
Players have different ideas for their sound, glad you found the amp you love!

Seemed like the only way to go...ahah
I play bass anyway...well mostly drums now. I always wanted an ampeg tube head, but i settled for a SWR 750x with an overdrive tube..that powered an ampeg full stack

I always dug SWR bass amps...my favorite sounding bass rigs are Gallien Krueger, but they have pretty bad reliability issues. On stage, I always used Yorkville heads & cabs.

My wife played thru an Ampeg SVT years ago. That is 'the' killer bass amp, but it started having some problems. She's using a Hartke amp thru EAW cabinets with EV Speakers which sounds very good. I had a bass player that had a GK bass amp, but it sounded real puny and midrangey to my ears. Could have been the from his fingers though. Don't remember the model.
If you want that SVT grind, i've read good reviews on the Fulldrive Bass pedal by Fulltone.

Trace Elliot had the very best sounding tube front end/solid state power amplifier in the late 90's, everyone that tried it on our stage remarked how even it was. I'll admit I spent some time matching speakers and cabinets for optimum usage. My favorite recent guitar rig has been a pair of Fender Tone Masters hand wired in AZ with a multi stomp box front end switched thru an all copper nitrogen filled relay remote and volume controlled by a VCA foot pedal keeping the wires under a foot in and out from each device for minimal signal loss. It rocked the house every night

Well, it sure beats hauling around those Hammond monsters! Although, i still have a friend who would never dream of switching from his B-3/Leslie rig, and i can certainly understand that. I got a Korg leslie simulator quite awhile back and it's not bad at all...using it on guitar. I've never tried it with a keyboard.

Folks would be amazed at how many number 1 hits from Nashville feature solos on Peavey Classic 50s.

I believe it! My buddy Marc went to Berkly in Boston for guitar. He said a roommate of his had one and loved it. He loves playing on mine. Looks nice too

If you're looking for early Who or Blue Cheer they're the ticket To my ear they're much like HiWatt in that regard, pretty much a one-trick pony unless you add a gob of aftermarket stomp boxes.
When you get right down to it, unless you're choosing an amp for it's pure tone...say like Mark, you just plug directly into it and play...any amp is going to sound much like any other amp once you start piling on the pedals; the biggest noticable difference will be the speaker size and not the amplifier. Of course, the hands on the guitar makes the most difference and you can't buy that

Exactly...the true tone is in the fingers.
And like you said about the Orange amps...they're good at what they do...as any quality amp should. I know a bunch of "new-age" rockers who use them for a dirty, gritty metal tone. Do a good job at it, but not for me...my style is blues/country, so I prefer class AB amps over class A.

Wow was I surprised by this post. I didn't realize there were so many guitar playing BA and SM enthusiasts. My favorite amp is my old fender twin, but about 25 years ago (showing my age too) I picked up a Deluxe Reverb II that I really like. It was one of the first Fender channel switchers and a lot lighter than a twin with JBL's. I've played through the new cyber twin and like that for a modeling amp. A buddy of mine loved his Line 6 but said it didn't hold up out on the road for what that info's worth. Sorry for rambling just didn't expect to get guitar and amp info on this site.

A buddy of mine built me a Dumble clone, from the schematics that are available at http://schematicheaven.com/dumble.htmSooo sweet. I'm not into emulation either, but you're on the right track by plugging your Rockman into it. The Sholz stuff is all solid state and usually sounds really good. If you can't go tube, at least go solid state.

I'm a tube enthusiast as well. I play through a modded Peavey Delta Blues (30 watts, 15" speaker) and just love it. It's got tone from sweet smooth clean to raging overdrive. the only problem I have with it is that sometimes it's just too F'n loud.
I don't play out, although something may be coming up, but if I were in a cover band I think I could manage all the tones I would need with some pedal action. I can definitely see the attraction of something like the Line 6 amps and who knows in another 5-10 years maybe the majority will be saying "you play a tube amp?!"

It really has nothing to do with nostalgia. It's all about tone, and as much anyone tries, you will never achieve the sound & "feel" of a quality tube amp with solid state.
The big reason we wandered away from tubes in the 80's was due to tube shortages. The US stopped making tubes, and we had a hard time getting good ones in from China or Russia. Sovtek out of Russia, along with various US & Asian producers are now making high quality tubes in huge quantities.
