We often read that men make the best chefs. So I was wondering how many of the guys here actually can cook?

Now for me when I left school and home to work (in another town) I very quickly learned that it is either takeaways or learn how to cook. I was however fortunate that I had a buddy that was a master chef in the Royal Navy so I learned quite a few neat tricks from him.

I cook like a fiend. I really enjoy creating a meal for my family. Cooked for a living for 8 years before I joined the Air Force. Especially enjoy laying down some Bar-B-Que.

I do all the cooking in my house. I have for the last 15 years. When Sue went back to work I took over because I get home earlier than she does.

I learned to cook "helping" my grandma at a young age. Although I was no expert by the time I got married I could make a fairly wide variety of items. Unlike Deb who I swear could scald water at that time. Over the last 32 years we've both become pretty good cooks, obvious if you judge by our shapes. I make some things especially well and she with others. We trade off depending on who's in the mood and what we're having. The dogs especially like her cooking as she drops more and usually lets them have it.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

+1 except as the oldest kid I also cooked for my siblings when "babysitting" and I'm the family food dropper when it comes to the pooches. Lately, since I've become desk bound, Mrs. T has handled more of the evening repast preparations. It's all good...

I am an excellent cook when I have time. I make some of the best home made BBQ (Sloppy Joe to us older guys) and I make beef jerky that everyone I have ever let try it says it's the best they ever had. I make both from scratch making the sauces and all. Thats not all I cook but those are my specialty.

I am an excellent cook but that is a woman's job. I make my wife cook once she gets home from work. She has to pay the nanny, go buy groceries, then cook. I am too busy watching sports center all day to worry about cooking.

I have worked for (and employed) both male and female chefs almost all of whom were very talented. I don't see any difference, just like most things in life, except in the individual's abilities. When married, I did most of the daily cooking, as I learned to cook in restaurants (quick!). My ex handled the holidays and I pitched in on the sides. I value the experience I gained but glad I don't have to do it for a living now. Playing around with Thai and Vietnamese cooking now, hard to find the ingredients and even harder to get my 10 year old daughter to try most of it. Over the years I have found that women really like guys that can cook!

Women and cats will do as they please. Men and dogs should just get used to that fact and relax

I remember my first apartment in college, ahh........a few years ago. Promptly went out and bought a bunch of those 4 for a $1 frozen pot pies. Quickly realized that wasn't going to "Get 'er done", way before "Get 'er done" was popular. Since then I've tried various dishes, and have rarely gotten ill. My Texas sister always says "If you can read and follow directions" you can cook. I make hot German Potato Salad that drives the blue haired ladies crazy, except it isn't the blue haired ladies ladies I'm trying to impress. Most meals worth eating begin with a sliced or diced onion IMO .

Not exactly true, You can make good food but cooking is a whole different ball game to me. Cooking is being able to go into the kitchen with no directions and make something good from scratch. Or take an existing recipe and make it better or different but still as good or better.

I used to do all the cooking before we moved, but seems to be at the moment whoever has the energy to do it.

I make a mean lasagne though

Maybe that stuff they pass off at the local 7/11 or military rations.

Part of what I do is evaluate beef/sheep/swine carcasses for yield and quality grade at a half dozen packing plants around Western MT for various county fair animals. As a side benefit, I picked up some original flavor and zippy ah-whoo-ahh "red pepper jerky" from Superior Meats, Superior, MT three weeks ago. T-A-S-T-Y . Another side benefit is riding the bike from here to there and back

Stop by Angelis, I'll share some, it'll turn you right around. It travels great on a motorcycle too.

I think I am a pretty good cook. I just dont like to do it much because of the time it takes, unless it involves fire, then I'll jump at grilling.

My wife and I reached an agreement early in our marriage (over 30 years now).

I cook.
She cleans up.

I do many types of cooking, and very well at that.

I wasn't saying for a meal but it's something I make from scratch that is absolutely fantastic and my own recipe.

I've been cooking for probably the last 20 years or more.

I can make just about anything. Pasta dishes and sauces, pesto of different varieties, pizza from scratch, all kinds of burgers, chicken and fish, tabouli, tamales (one of my latest dishes and great!), enchiladas, soups and stews, all kindza bean dishes, salsa, humus, hash browns, omelettes, pancakes etc...well, you name it. Some kind of intensive, some real simple to make.
Some things i make from a box but add other stuff.

I've not much experience on pastries though.
The wife loves it....and so do i since she's only a fair cook, although she's a great griller and makes great potato salad and deviled eggs.

One reason i got so into it is because i got tired of so-so food at restaurants, or too expensive food there, and also crap food from fast food places. I had enuf of it when i played in a band on the road. Even then, i started bringing a pot and a steamer with a hot plate to have some vegetables to eat in my hotel/motel room...as long as it wasn't smokin' with somethin' the management wouldn't know.
I had to have something semi-nutritious plus, you save a lotta money.

Don't get me wrong, i still like to have some good restaurant food or some good greasy burgers once in awhile.

Speaking of jerky:
I've not made jerky but i had some ostrich jerky that was fantastic.

mmmmm pesto

I too learned so I could eat good food when I was living alone. I add stuff to boxed food too sometimes. If you take those cheap mac and cheese boxes and add cream of chicken soup instead of the milk (still add the butter)and a chopped green pepper and a chopped onion some mushrooms and either some chicken or some tuna you have a very quick meal that tastes good. I also add peas sometimes. You can do the same with cream of mushroom soup and ground beef. I don't consider that from scratch but I call it doctoring something up.

Absolutely. One of the easiest things to do is 'doctor up' somethin' from a box. It's fast and tastes a lot better, not to mention stretching it further.

I don't have a waffle iron anymore, but that must be close to what i do...i have an ancient 8" cast iron skillet that i cook cornbread in. I have bigger cast iron skillets but that's the one i cook cornbread in. I think the cast iron makes it cook better, probably similar to the waffle iron.
I've been wanting to get another one of those.

After managing restaurants (never had a woman chef), having a couple of close friends that are chefs, learning some old school Italian cooking from my grandmother and doing some BBQ catering I think I do a decent job. The most requested specialty is my dry rub baby back ribs slow smoked for seven hours over cherry and oak.

My wife has her moments. (thankfully she does not read this)

I'll do some ribs for a get together. I'll throw on a pork butt or brisket too. Just don't blame me if you find yourself dreaming about them later.

just made dinner tonight and thought I would share this. Sounds bad but is actually good. Take equal parts of grape (eldeberry is better but try and find it) jelly and mustard and slowly heat over low heat mixing constantly until fully mixed. Cut up hot dogs in it and you can either keep heating on the stove or bake at 400 deg. for awhile. Makes an excellet hors douvers (sp?) We like it so much I cook that and a veg. and call it dinner. The jelly and mustard make a sweet and sour sauce.
