Well, thanks to the input offered by many of you and something I found in my shop, I have removed all the melted synthetic rag from my pipe.

I tried the oven cleaner that was suggested, but the goo was so adhered to the pipe that it didn't do anything. The carb cleaner I was using was taking forever and I was getting very frustrated.

So I spotted a tub of Mother's Mag wheel & Aluminum Polish sitting on the shelf in my shop and said "why not, I'll give it a try". Wow, was I impressed. It removed all of it in less than an hour. Now the pipe looks better than the dirty one on the left side.

So I want to thank all of you who gave me suggestions. And I also want to say hopefully none of you will do what I did----BUT---if you do---remember---Mother's Mag Wheel & Aluminum Polish!

Just be careful with that stuff on cosmetic chrome items, it will make micro scratches that will be un-removable. Is more abrasive that chrome polish to work on Aluminum. It will shine it, but it also scratches stuff too so go carefully on pipes, but don't use it on your fancy chrome items.

3M makes some 'plastic steel wool' that they sell for everything from cleaning kitchen pots and pans to stripping paint. It you get the fine grade you can usually remove anything from chrome or magnesium with small effort. Since it is plastic, the fine grade should not scratch chrome.
