ok so, i finally found what i was looking for on ebay and have been watching it for the past 7 days when AT THE LAST 15 SECONDS someone comes in and bids me out. i was the first and ONLY bid for the entire 7 days. then some one beat me by 2 dollars on that ****** low profile seat that was on ebay. shouldn't there be some rule or something that keeps people like this from bidding on items at the last possible moment? i mean really, do you just sit at your house all day in your tighty whities waiting for 1 minute to be left on the clock? get a life you ebay snipers!

Thats the whole point of putting your stuff on ebay in the first place...to get people to bid against eachother.
The only way to get a good price on ebay these days is to catch someone who is new putting a ridiculous buy it now price or wait till the last possible second to get your bid in. Maybe someone should start a mc parts auction site and set a 15 minute rule like Gunbroker has.

Why is he *******? Cause he won. Ive been bidding on ebay for a long time and I know that if I really want it the only way to get it is to do a last minute bid. I also never bid until the end...I try not to drive the price too high otherwise its just not worth it. Example...there was an air lift controler I wanted but the other bidders were bidding on it for a few days driving the price up...it finally sold $20 less than I can find it on another site...not worth it. Dont be ****** at teh other bidder...be ****** you werent as sly as they were and now youll know for next time.
Putting a time limit on it is futile...If I know teh auction ends 15 minutes earlier Id just do the same thing.

Dude, you were sniped. It's a common practice. In fact, it's not like they were sitting there waiting for the last couple minutes. There are scripts that will snipe for you. And don't sweat the "beaten by $2" bit, that's probably just the minimum bid increment. He would've beat you by fifty cents if he could. I was bidding on a black and silver tank last month and it sat at $125 for a long time. So I bid on it. I think my max bid was $175. Part of me thought it would be nice if it slipped under the radar and I got a deal. Another part of me just wanted to keep it "honest" and not let someone else get a smokin' deal. But I didn't want it bad enough to pay $250 for it or set up a sniper script to try and snag it. I have yet to see something I wanted bad enough to game the system. I think the only auctions I've won were ones where I was willing to spend the money and less likely to be sniped, or where I contacted the seller and made arrangements outside of the auction, or where it was a "buy it now" item and I thought the price was fair.

Being as i use to do eBay quite a bit in the past....if you really want something, but you're not willing to sit with it and get the last bid in...bid high. But, there are some programs out there that will automatically bid up to a certain point for you...i don't know about those.
That's the way auctions work. It can be a p*sser but that's auctions. I used to get hateful email because i won something over them...well, they shoulda had a higher bid.
One time, i just happened on the auction and bid during the last seconds....hate e-mail because i outbid them at the last second...wasn't even trying to snipe, just there at the last minute or so. There'll always be another item up for bid like it, sooner or later.

That's how it works with "evilbay" Thorn.
I think it's more beneficial for sellers than buyers, though some from this site have done alright buying. They may offer some tips.
I've bid a few times on assorted items and never won an auction. But whenever I reached the max that I was willing to pay, I just let the snipers have it.

Hey! Anybody 'round here wanna buy a cool low profile seat I just got????
(oh sorry....wrong forum)
Naw! I'm just pullin' your leg there Thorn.
This kind'a thing happens all the time. It happened to be the first time I ever bid for some stuff(hard bags) on Ebay.
Really irritated me too at the time!
(hmmmm...irritated...isn't there a thread somewhere lately that...........)

Before the snipe programs I use to find an item I wanted that was ending at an odd hour, like the middle of the night and just set an alarm and go bid at the last minute. I got some good prices doing that.
I always bid the last 15 seconds or so. Why would you bid earlier it just raises the price.

I hear ya Thorn and understand your frustration but this is the evolution of eBay. I've been on there since 1999 and have seen the transformation. Some changes for the good, some bad. Unfortunately, there is nothing wrong with sniping and it is actually the method of choice now for a successful 'auction'. Keith and Dave nailed it: Quote:

this is why i dont buy anything from ebay

I'll bid and if it goes to someone else FINE. That means they are paying too much for it. Auctions blow. I have made one successful bid on Ebay. Got a Speedy tank for 100 or 110 bucks. No last minute bids no up at midnight, I said If I get it I Get it. The tank is mint btw...MINT! Hum, maybe I'll put the new pingel on that one and ....
I currently have two outstanding bids. Early yes. Do I care if I win? Sort of. Will I want them at my bid price OF COURSE! Do I care if I don't? No way hosa.
Flea markets. EBay. At both you pay more than you would at the traditional retailers. Auctions are all about fun drinking and getting the best of someone. That's why prices go so high. And that's why I bid and walk away.

I always bid in the last 15 seconds if I want something. Like has been said above if the price goes up close to where you can just go buy it new, then why bother? I also bid what I am willing to spend in the last 10 to 15 seconds so if the person against me tries another bid and it is less than my max then I still get it.If not then I don't care because I bid my max.

It called sniping- Friar John nailed it. When I ebay, I'll lowball the bid the minimum so it is harder to cancel the auction, but I never place my real bid until the last 10 [italic]seconds[/italic], or I write a snipe script to bid (proxy) for me. Ebay actually offers proxy bidding. Bottom line, If you want it, bid the maximum that you want to pay. if you don't win- well- no harm, no foul. Ebay used to be a great place to get deals, but any more, it is the pawnshop of the web. Occasionally there is the good deal, but you got to work for it and stay involved. I'd rather watch the S&P.

i didn't bid the minimum i wanted to pay for it... but i DID set my maximum bid well past the opening bid.
it just gets frustrating with the 15 seconds thing. I didn't even know they had programs that bid on ****** for you. whoever came up with it is clever, but at the same time, the days of healthy auctioning is over.
Zmillion, i really don't give a ****** if the guy is on here or not. i hope he reads this. i had a workshop to administer when the end of the auction came around so i wasn't sitting next to my computer 15 seconds prior to close. guess if i REALLY wanted it, i would've cancelled the workshop to be next to the computer.
either way, i lost. which sucks. but i was really needing it and not wanting to pay the 400 dollars for a new one from brent. i'm short and already have lowered shocks, but it's still not as comfortable as i'd like.
thanks for listening to my rant.

Believe me, I understand your feeling, but there's no such thing as a "healthy auction" online. Online auctions are a completely different animal than live auctions. You can't snipe at a live auction - unless you literally snipe the opponent. Oh, and that's also why I try to buy as many used parts as I can from the members here. A lot of the time you can just put a call out for a wanted item and Bob's yer uncle.

I don't see it in terms of good and bad. You have no right to an item 15 seconds before the auction ends. You don't have a right to it 15 nanosecond before it ends. Sorry, man. As others have said and reiterated, it's a game. It's a funky game show version of capitalism. Now you know the rules and what it takes to play. You can choose to play or choose not to like many of the rest of us, including myself.

In the UK, the guys n girls that frequent Bonnevilleamerica.com know each others Ebay names and we do not bid unless that person has been out bid.
You can get some really good deals as I have found out with my Speedmaster wheels and forks. Yes, I wait for the last few minutes on the majority of items I buy so not to push the price up too much.

Ebay could easily end sniping if they wanted to. They don't care so they don't do it. All they would have to do is make it so an action can't end if there's been a bid in the last # hours. No more sniping. Just really high prices for garbage

I've had some real bargains of eBay....
ĆāĆĀ£5 for a Speedie fender, ĆāĆĀ£30 for a set of stock shocks....
But on the other hand my bargain shocks....I've no use for at the mo. The bloke did put in a few extras - thumb bolt for the pillion and a Speedie battery strap and something esle that I don't remember. And the fender, I bought it in the hope that it had the metal bracket (which is bent on the 03...) I didn't.
I look every two or three days to see if anything is of interest or some thing that I can replced, but in a modded state. But I won't pay loads. IF I'm sniped, I'm sniped. THat's the nature of eBay and any other aution system.

If you don't mind competing during purchase, one can find some deals on used items there, for instance, my 05 Speedmaster with a depreciation enhanced price of 1,200 miles on it, a name brand open box mini stereo for my daughter's dorm room for $25, a used yet defect free Olympus pro-sumer level digital camera for half price, & a new Vega flip open helmet for $40 less than retail. I used to manage a small 'fleet' of cell phones at my former job. I've purchased a dozen or so used phones there and never had a problem with any of them. I sold a Triumph Chevron rain suit there for pretty close to retail. (It was a nice suit, but a challenge to button up for a fat guy) There's no way I could have moved it for that amount in this little town o' mine. On the other hand, I contemplated moving a low mileage still under warranty rag top V 8 Mustang there, but the top prices from their recently completed auction history section showed at best, NADA wholesale pricing.
I haven't always won, but with the bid up to feature, I can avoid paying more than an item is worth. Chalk up the losses to someone else was willing to pay more. If it's an I gotta have it item, I may battle it out in the last minute.
The accountability feature of ebay sellers via the feedback system is a plus. I've been buying new motorcycle items there just because I can generally count on prompt shipping from the ebay stores. Can't say the same for most other online motorcycle supply vendors.

I have to agree with EDG1911.
ebay would be a true auction site if it adapted the 15 minute rule from the gun auction site. as of now , ebay is not an auction site. it is a quick draw site , he who is fastest wins.
I get sniped all the time. there are plenty of sniper sites you can join and let them bid for you at the last second, and they are cheap enough to use.

I had some Ebay frustration a few months ago after winning an XM home stereo dock for a very low price. Tried to pay the seller via Paypal, but his account was suspended. I emailed the seller through Ebay and his email account with no response. Requested his phone number from Ebay and called him several times, no response. I wanted this item and it was offered by numerous other vendors as a "buy it now", but I didn't want to be responsible for two.
I contacted Ebay's resolution department numerous times to ask them to strike the item from my record so I could buy the same item elsewhere. I kept getting the stock reply, contact Paypal, contact the seller, blah, blah, blah. I'd already done all of that over three weeks with no response. They didn't come out and say it, but did not remove the item. It's still in my Won list as "Unpaid". I saved my documentation if the seller would ever give me bad feedback and bought a similar item elsewhere.
It made me mad Ebay kept reciting their stock replies and really took no action against the seller. If I had paid and not rec'd the item, I believe Paypal would have stepped up and gotten resolution.

I've heard Paypal is fairly useless when a deal goes bad. I suppose they're too tired from counting their profits to lend a hand. I reckon my turn at the burn may come one of these days.

I want to know what would happen if two or three people have the same snipe-at-the-last-second-with-a-bid type programs! Who wins then? I've masses of stuff sniped at the last second. It's a pian but hey, something else will crop up. I've had some good deals too, a couple of cars, car wheels etc and I collect old license plates - there are hundreds on there, often for peanuts.

If you get FIXATED on an eBay item , you can develop an "I gotta get it from the other guy" mentality . It's just a chest-pumping "I'll outbid you" war , and you WILL pay more than you ever thought you would . Wow , fun . Safe way to bid - I see an item I want , figure the MAX I want to pay , enter THAT figure very near the item's end ( maybe an hour ) , and WALK AWAY . If I get it , great , if I don't , great . Life goes on . P.S. - my wife is over my shoulder and added the ubiquitous comment " ya snooze ya lose " .

I snipe...it's how I get something I really want...got my Specialty Spares Pipes that way...got my Pioneer Sx1080 that way...It's what anyone who really wants something does...I don't use any "program" to do it I do it manually...for my pipes I had to set my alarm to get up at 3:47am to get them...and when I sell stuff I fully expect ti to happen...I'm always shocked when bidding is fierce with 3 days left...most action takes place in the last 15 min of an auction...sniping is a fact of life on EBAY...

I guess I'm going against the grain here but I've used eBay many times to acquire good, quality items and to sell some of my eccentric stuff (like my C band satellite gear); just got a nice set of D&D pipes for my standard Bonnie last week. I've won a few and lost a few but "c'est la vie" with auctions. I guess working audio systems for auctions for the last 25 years gives me a different outlook.

Honestly at that point, especially if they're using the same sniping program, it comes down to the internet connection. Who can basically ping the ebay server fastest probably wins.
Within the past year Amazon.com had a promotion where they sold 1000 Xbox360s for $100 off. The sale started at high noon. I had the product page up and ready. At 11:59:55 I hit 'reload' and by the time my page reloaded, it was sold out.

I don't see anything wrong with "sniping" as long as it is not someone using one of those automated programs. I have won and lost auctions in the final seconds of an aution. I have sold things that doubled in price in the last few minutes.
It's an auction, that is the way it goes. That is the way it is with any auctions, online or live. If you have ever been to a live auction, sometimes the bidding restarts just as the auctioneer is about slam down the gavel. In sealed bid auctions, you never know what anyone else is bidding at all until its over. My son's school has an auction every year. They have tables full of stuff. Each table is designate to end at a certian time, each item has a piece of paper in front of it to write down your bid. It is funny to watch some of the people write down their bid on the paper as the last 10 seconds are counting down, talk about live sniping (seen some arguments start).
If eBay or any other timed auction said you can't bid in the final 15 seconds, then in reality, teh auction would end 15 seconds sooner and "snipers" would bid 15 seconds before that. Maybe some people think that after one person bids, the auction should be over, what would be the point or fun of that.
If it something that I really care about getting, I will suck it up and use the "Buy-It-Now" instead of crossing my fingers for the the next few days.

One thing's for sure. I don't envy the ebay management and the hate mail they must get.

One possible way they could curtail the sniping would be to makle it so no bids could be placed by a member who hasn't bid before in the last hour.So anyone interested would have to bid at least an hour before the item ends, once that bid has been placed then bidding can continue until it ends. So you could place an initial bid then try and snipe.

Hmmmm... when you go to a live auction you do not bid an hour before and then wait. It all happens real time. Look at it like this, the seven days or whatever the seller chooses to list at is really like setting the date and time for the actual auction. You look to see when it will end and if interested you show up and bid.
There are still deals to be had. My friend was getting married and wanted to buy watches for the wedding party. He picked out some seiko kinetics that were $450 each msrp. The best deal he could find was to get the nine he needed for around $3k. I went on ebay and found new old stock of seiko kinetics that had an msrp of $485. I got the nine of them for $1300 plus shipping. He liked them more.
