Folks: Could someone with the Progressive 440 shocks please find the ID sticker on their shocks and post. Mine are: 03-1315 - 120/170
I have always had my shocks on the softest setting, even with my wife on board and think the original buyer might have spec'd heavy duty springs when he ordered direct from Progressive. Wondering if my spring are heavy, would I get a better ride by having Progressive swap them out over the winter. Never going past the most softest setting (1 ring showing) seems odd.

Thanks Phil. How do you set the firmness, ie how many rings showing from the top?

Also if you go to about page 16 and about the 4th one down there is some talk about setting up the 440's when I first started thinking about getting them. Phil-- I'd transfer the link here but just don't know how to do it.

Really, I didn't get a book. I'm curious as to what springs the others have. Just doesn't make sense they would need to be set at only the softest setting.

Found the thread and PM'd Tapole, who swapped out to lighter springs. He's only 168 lbs though and I don't know if he rides two up. I'm 180 and the wife about 130.

I'm 250. My wife is 140. The 440s I have (4404214C) ride pretty awful on rough back roads when 2 up, even set at full pre load. Smooth roads are fine. Bumpy roads cause the shocks to bottom.
The bottoming didn't happen with the stock shocks, but they rode awful. When one up, the 440s are fantastic - great ride, awesome handling - an extreme difference over stock.

Hey Guys, generic response here. Since I have not seen teh 440's up close and personal I can't speak to the information I just got from Progressive Tech.
Al, they say you have 10 levels of adjustment, keep playing with it, go light when alone crank it up with two up.
These shocks were designed with the bikes gross maximum weight in mind of 440 lbs. When you get close to that amount, it is going to affect the shocks performance, just like the Stockers.
Hope this helps. eddy

I'm 180 as well & followed Tadpole(Russel)'s lead on 1375C (115/155). The spec on them says they're 1/4" shorter than the 120/170, but mine were more like 3/8" shorter. I can't issue the rave review that Tadpole did, but can say they don't spank as hard in the rough stuff. Haven't tried 'em 2 up.

I got the standard 440s. I am 200 pounds and my wife is 100 pounds. Alone, anywhere from 1 to 2 rings showing is great. With my wife, I need a little more than 2 rings showing to keep from bottoming out. (There are 3 rings total).

Tapole seems to have checked out. Tell me about the swap: - Did you do it yourself or have to send them to Progressive? - How much were the replacement springs? - Where do you set the rate now for solo riding? Quote:

>- Did you do it yourself or have to send them to Progressive? I have their spring compresser tool, so did it myself. Ridiculously easy job after shocks are off. Having had my 440s apart twice now, I'd suggest this approach. The only gotcha I know of is sometimes the tool is out of stock for long periods. >- How much were the replacement springs? $66 + shipping for chrome ones from MAW. http://www.mawonline.com/progress.htm#Shock%20springs- Where do you set the rate now for solo riding? Even with the shorter springs, they're currently set on minimum preload & haven't bottomed. One of the checks I ran was a stretch of 1 & 1/2 lane blacktop with a little bit of everything to offer including 1 lane bridges with the typically brutal approaches. I took it pretty easy & they did ok.

Thanks, I might take the $66 gamble. I can get access to a spring compressor.

Hi Guys , I sent a msge to ss but seems it never made it... It took me about half hour to swap the springs out (without the factory tool..if anybody needs info on how, let me know) my setup has been on the first line down riding solo on smooth road and take it up to the next line when playing on rough/twisty type roads, perfect for me...i haven,t had a passenger on yet, but am unable to bottom them out bouncing the bike up and down with me sitting on the rear.Combined with the sprogressive front springs using 10 weight synthetic oil the handling is brilliant,,I,m doing a ride across australia and up to the top and back, some 16,000 kms (10,000 miles) next month so i,ll give you rundown when i get back, cheers all, Tadpole

With the rear wheel off the ground, measure from the axle to a fixed point, say a fender mount screw. Then sit on the bike with full gear on, and feet on the pegs, while balancing yourself with an elbow against the wall. Re-measure - The sag should be around 25 or 30 mm.
