So I bought some kneepads on eBay. I bought them for a speedmaster, evne though they're for a bonneville, I think they're close enough. Supposedly you just put these on with contact cement..??? Anyone have any advice or tips?
I see a chrome bike and I want to paint it black.

If they are Triumph kneepads, they already have an adhesive backing. I WOULD BE CAREFUL using anything else......ANGELIS

The size is a bit off, but it looks ok against the tank. No adhesive backing though.

From the hardware store - clear silicone RTV - comes in a tube. Put a bead about an inch in from the edge and a couple of beads in the middle.....let it set before sticking on the tank. Then use tape (or??) to hold in place overnight....works like a charm.....

Now that sounds like a good idea. Worst case, I can get that stuff off, better than contact cement. Thanks for the tip!

Be careful what you use. Some Silicones are very acidic and can strip or discolor paint. Some of the Butal Rubber Products (still in a tube) may be better. Possibly some two sided tape may work.

What about some of that double sided tape used for sticking number plates on, it comes of without leaving any marks on painted bumpers.

Exactly right, the acid cure silicones are just that,i.e. acid cure, and the fumes they emit while curing are highly corrossive,so avoid using them against anything ferrous or electrical. Use a nuetral cure and you will be fine. If you are unsure wot you have, the acid cure smells like vinegar, whereas the nuetral has a more bitter smell.

One of the local Triumph dealers recommended 3M spray adhesive that you can find in most auto parts/paint supply stores. I haven't tried it yet, mainly because I don't want to spend $13 for the huge spray can that will only be used this one time.
Maybe I'll give the clear silicon a try.

Same stuff they use for aftermarket air dams and spoiler kits...sticks like crazy but safe for paint.

That sounds like maybe the easy/best way to go. Thanks all for your advice, much appreciated. Glad I checkec back, I had some acetic based silicone already that I would have used.
