Well, this morning (Sunday), I perhaps did the stupidest thing in my life, and wish I were dead...
I got up around 5 am, as usual, went down to the garage to put accumulated parts on my '72 T-120 Bonny, and of course when I opened the garage door, our littl Shi Tsu came down through the doggy door in a full gait, barking at the top of her lungs at absolutely nothing. This made me irritated, so I marched out into the street and called her, like I had something in my hand to feed her. She reluctantly approached me, and I grabbed her up, opened the Astro Van door, and put her in, shutting the door. Well, you can imagine what happened. Nobody missed her, until around 6 o'clock tonight, when I asked my son to reinstall the seats in the AstroVan, from where we had moved furniture. I was in the back yard, when I heard Kimmy just screaming....I could'nt even understand what she was saying. When my son slid open the Van door, there was Molly's little body stretched out and bloated. She had been dead for about 5 hours I figure, in the 96 degree heat, and all windows up from the previous night rain. I am devastated, and feel like an idiot. Kimmy is still trying to recover. Just shoot me...God knows I deserve it...

I second that one... go adopt a couple of dogs. I went through kind of the same thing due to the total inability to keep my Great Pyrenees in captivity. He was a master escape artist and finally got out one too many times! I'm sorry to hear about this.

We all do things and then get side tracked. I agreed with UncleCharlie...you obviously really loved the dog, so give that love to a couple that aren't loved right now. It's not resolution, but might go some way to filling the hole that is now in your lives.

And as Yota says don't be too hard on yourself.

And don't sit in the van with the windows up.

Go here Atlanta Pet Rescue there's a dog or two in need. Save one (or two) of these needy pups and your own soul at the same time. Sad but true it's unlikely you'll get over this tragic mistake; still, you can make good penance by giving a great life to an animal that has no future. Don't wait, the time to react is now.

Oh man, what a tragic accident. But it was an accident, so how ever bad you feel, dont get to hard on yourself.

Getting another puppy will help take away some of the pain. Hang in there.

Mark,

Thats just a tragic, and crushingly sad story, so, so sorry to hear it...but as others have said, it was an accident...take your time to grieve, then get back to living, and loving a new pet.

I did the same thing with my Jack Russell a few years ago. Thankfully it was spring time in Florida and my windows were super tinted and thus cool in my car. I now know how close that incident came from being a disaster. I know how you must feel. Sorry for your loss…..it was just an accident though. Don’t beat yourself up too bad. Just make it up.

At least your big enough to admit it was your fault and explain what you did. It speaks volumes about your character that you're willing to admit when you're wrong. The only thing you can do now is move on.
You can't change the past, you can only work to make the future better.

First let me say thank you for everyone's kindness...second let me say
I am sooooo freakin angry and hurt and distraught right now.
Molly was my baby. From the quirky way that she would lay up under the kitchen cabinets with her feet propped up on her back to the way she would lay there licking the floor for no aparant reason. No matter where I went she would follow me. Mark has tried to be patient with me..but I was told at 1100 last night that I had been crying for 7 hours and wasn't that enough. And that he was sorry...what more ccould he do. I know he's hurting and upset...but right nnow I'm having a really hard time dealing with it. In the mmean time appears to be cheerily moving on. Makes it even hharder to deal with.

Mark & Kimmy,

Mark and Kimmy-
This thread has been on my mind all day. I'm so sorry for your loss, and so very sad that this terrible accident happened.
I have a Shih Tzu, Geisha, and she knows how to be just three things- happy, lovable, and dumb, all of which make her so very precious.

I think Mark was very courageous to have posted about Molly's death. Kimmy, just keep crying until you're done. My thoughts are with you both.

Almost did the same to one of our cats, our baby, by mistake. I had left the car door open for some reason, and my wife came home and shut the car door. Luckily for the cat, it was overnight, so not hot, and the worst that happened was that she got panicked being locked in the car. The downside for me, she shredded several parts of my cars interior (headliner, door sill, a-pillar covering, etc...) You can imagine what my first thought was when I saw what the cat had done (after letting her escape and before realizing what she'd done!!)
Then of course I gave my wife a broadside for not checking the car, but truth be told, I probably would have done the same as she did. I hope you get past this.

What strikes me most-- having just become aware of this sad episode-- is that Mark turned first to his fellow BA.Com pals in his moment of hurt.
I can certainly relate, as this group is very special.
As a dog lover(I have two Shi-Tzus, don't ask) I recognize the impact of this loss and I admire the way you have dealt with it.

Mark, good move. After our kitten Fritz, was hit by a car, my wife went out within a couple days and adopted a great 2 year old cat from the humane society. We still felt blue about Fritz, and when we left South Carolina, we even felt bad about leaving him behind, but Schubert (we didn't name him) helped us past the grieving part. And to help us even more, somebody dumped a 6 week old kitten, who we ended up naming Foolish, on our front lawn. Sometimes surprises are good....(although at the time I was a little miffed at the extra mouth and litterbox...)

Sorry I don't get on here too often...just to let every one know.. Loving the new pup. I still miss Molly incredibly I think about what she might think of "Monster", she was really good with babies. He barked for the first time tonight. You have to listen real good or you'll miss it he's so quiet, except when he's crying to be picked up. I know they say to carry one around too much will make them sick.. but he won't let us put him down. We haven't fully decided on a name yet...Not too sure Paco fits. Maybe ya'll can offer up suggestions.

"Speedy?"
My friend's Chihuahua spends most of his day running at top speed from wherever to wherever. He's not much for sitting still.

Diego is Zorro's first name. I believe the whole monkier is Don Diego de La Vega... and Zorro's mask is the reason we named our late Pyrenees after him.
