Just pulled my america down into a million pieces (Really scarey lucky I bought a manual) Thinking about blocking the crossover tube between the headers. Gunna have tunable exhausts so backpressure should not be a problem. Just wondering if any one done this mod might have a sound clip of the so called funky sound produced by this.

I did it but have no sound clip. All I can tell you is it didn't make it louder just kind of seperated the exhaust note of each side. The difference is small but I like it.

Yes I just looked at the 360 view on the website and the crossover is clearly visible. It goes under the engine just behind the footpegs from the inside of one pipe to the inside of the other.

somebody needs to correct me if i am wrong but, i believe that by eliminateing the crossover, there is a reduction in low end torque and top end speed???

That's my understanding as well. The crossover is apparently there to enhance, not deter exhaust function. I read why somewhere on the interweb, but can't seem to find that piece now. The article claimed the crossovers aren't about equalization as much as a better way to move the gases for valve timing or the like.

The crossover does enhance the scavenging effects of the exhaust pulse and improves the motor's combustion function, whether that gains torque or hp would depend on the cam timing. That said, it seems a lot of riders will give up a slight bit of power (which they then increase through airflow mods) to enhance the sound of their engine. I wouldn't characterize either position as wrong, just depends on your end goal.

I haven't given up anything. I no longer needed the crossover since I am much less restricted. On my last dyno run I was over 65 HP , can't remember the torque spec anymore but I can tell you it wasn't less than before the removal. The crossover only has a real effect if the pipes are restricted and exhaust needs that path to escape.

Less power? Maybee with the stock pipes. I have aftremarket pipes and while I have not wound it out for some time I havnt noticed any less power. Just a better exhaust note. My plug cost we $1-40 and took about 1 hr to fit. Easy to fix if you dont like it.

You both make my point "which they then increase through airflow mods". Thank you. You really can't know if it's effective in combination with aftermarket mods without before and after dynos to compare but my best guess is the crossover has little effect once the intake and exhaust are really opened up.

I did before and after because I was still working on my jets and I had a very small increase but I chalk that up to the proper jetting not the crossover removal. My crossover removal is not easily reversed I cut my crossover out completely and welded it shut.

Bloody helll boys!!!! All I wanted to know is what the thing is gonna sound like. I dont really need a lecture on the pros and cons of exhaust scavenging. Any one got a sound bite of a 270 motor with the crossover removed???????

Alright now which size frost plug? I've read 30mm and also 1 1/4 which one is it, or what is the size? Because a 30mm is not 1 1/4!

I couldn't find one that fit inside the way I wanted when I did mine so I flipped it over and used it as a cap. This method requies cutting the tube off. You need to leave enough to tap the plug on. I found them that fit nice and tight but welded them to be sure. I can't tell you what size it was since I forgot. I took my header pipe to the parts store with me and kept trying them until one fit. Take the side that slides inside so you have the smaller diameter, both sides are that size but the one side is flared to slide over the other.

Hey popcorn. You have to remove the pipes to do the job. I took my headers off and I took mine down to the shop and tried a few. Didnt measure a thing. I didnt cut anything in case I wanted to put it back as it was. Just find one that fits "nizentight" Ha Ha. Mo
