I bought by first bike approx. one week ago. It's a beautiful 2004 black bonnie. The guy that sold it to me said he lost the steering lock and suggested that I replace it. 1) I'm having trouble finding the part online. Do I need to go to a Triumph dealer? 2) Do I really need to worry about the lock or are their better alternatives? I'm going to use the bike to commute to work (at a college campus in a med. sized city) and will leave it parked for eight hours or more a day.
Any thoughts?

If you're reffering to the fork lock, and are concerned about leaving the bike, I would find a more suitable locking mechanism. The fork lock will do little more than slow a thief down, or keep an honest man honest. It could very easily be broken by someone who wanted your bike.

A $20 disc lock might be an equally suitable alternative. Both are designed to thwart the casual snatch & run thieves.
The odds are in our favor in one respect as I don't believe too many pros are interested in what may amount to a Triumph's $3,000 to $5,000 (fence price) score, when for the same effort, they can make a $10,000 or $15,000 score off a $23,000 bike.

the steering lock aint' worth much... You can do what my kid did... do to your local Harley/Honda/Suzuki/Kaw/Triumph store and get one of those $100 chains that weigh about 20 lbs....lock your bike to a post or something solid, if you cant' do that, then at least lock the front wheel to the frame... four big guys can still pick it up but they pbly wont' bother when there's a nice Harley sitting there they can use for parts... If you have the $$$, LoJack works pretty well.... Oh yeah.... ATGATT... All the gear ALL the time... much less pain... Good luck with school, my son is also in college... Oh and ALWAYS BACK into parking spaces...<BG> Mary

First of all... Welcome Chuck! Hope you can to make it to lunch in Chehalis on the 25th. I think I have used the steering lock on my bike once. Like others have mentioned a disc lock may be your best bet, or a good cable lock. Soren

Thank you all for the advice. I've heard good things about both the disc locks and cable locks. Thankfully, I'm garaging the bike night so a disc lock may be all I need to keep the curious college kids at bay.

Along those lines, I bought a disc lock but it wouldn't fit on my 02 America; too big. Anyone know off hand where to get one that fits?

Last year I lost my steering lock key. I got one at RPM in Dallas. It wasn't much. I drilled the old one out in about a minute. Pretty easy to replace. I like the steering lock although it just keeps honest people honest. The best hope is to use two locks and keep the bike in your room when you travel, if it fits in the elevator.

The steering lock keeps your friends (loosely) from rolling your sickle to another spot and having a good laugh. These bikes roll way too easy.

This Xena Alarm is on my short list. I like the idea of a disc lock that alerts you if you try to ride off with it still engaged.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. Herm Albright (1876 - 1944)

I have the Xena lock and the alert has saved me damage a couple of times. I have an '05 Speedmaster, and the lock does rub against the wheel, causing a bit of damage.
I have it on good authority these locks really do make a difference in avoiding your bike getting stolen. My wife's a counsellor, and the guys in her felons groups say these locks will keep your bike from getting stolen.
