It was a really great time yesterday. I felt extremely comfortable after the first class and can't wait to go again next weekend. Being a first time rider - it was tough having them tell you "Anticipating the stop during the test will cost you points" for the quick stop portion. It didn't bother me too much but come on...I've only been riding for 4 hours.

I also think I need new boots...the Cat boots that I have are so thick that I'm having trouble feeling the shifter on my foot. I think I'm going to buy another steel toe but a bit thinner. I guess its also something that gets better in time.

Its going to be nerve-wracking taking the test w/ all eyes on me. I actually feel more comfortable when not being watched (which I guess makes sense). Hopefully I pass without any problems. Then - its off to pick up my new bike from Steveh.

Greetings Oates,
I know what you mean, they are trying to get you into Good habits but at it seems like they are overdoing. But when you look back at the training, after you have your first close call, you'll actually be thankful. I took the MSF course, and I believe honestly that everyone should. It may feel like an annoyance but trust me when i say It's well worth listen to the repeats.

A New Bike.... That's always fun. I waitied till I finished my courses and had ridden my old bike for about a month just to get a good thought on what I wanted.

Its actually a used (but new to me) bike...LOL.

Thanks for the words, guys. I'm going to log and do some course reading. I wish I had a bike to ride on today. Oh well. Once I'm done w/ the test I'll get one.

Oates,
I took the MSF course (in one weekend) back in February and then didn't even ride until I got my new TBA until late July. I was surprised how much I remembered from the course and how quickly I've improved on my new ride. I'm far from perfect but I'm pretty happy with myself and how much fun it is to ride my bike.
My biggest problem with the course and test was right hand turns. I still take them too wide. Left hand, no problem. I heard from my brother (long time biker) that right handed people do have trouble making right hand turns, hence the test requires it. I just need to feel more comfortable leaning to the right. But it will come.

Good luck next week , get your bike and then practice, practice, practice. That's what I've been doing.

If you haven't already, read everything in the "Riding Technique" section, and practice in empty mall parking lots and deserted roads.

I'll be doing alot of riding in parking lots etc.... for sure. I really want to be safe on the roads for myself and others.

Now if only I could find a used America or Speedy closer than 6 hours away....LOL.

Oates, good luck with the course.
I found it to be challenging but you learn a LOT of very important stuff.
When you pass the course & get your bike, start slowly and build confidence & skill.
Ride safe.

Glad you are taking the course. Good luck on it all. See ya soon when you pick up the bike.

One other note....IF you want to use steel toe boots....check into the plastic toed ones. ALOT lighter.

Later

Good on you for taking a serious course before hopping on a great bike. Start thinking of your return trip as three two-hour segments. You'll want to stop every two hours and top off the tank, stretch your legs, drink a straight beverage and review your progress. Won't hurt to sit a minute or two and admire your new bike either. You'll want a set of earplugs as six hours of wind noise can be overwhelming to a novice. You're in for a great ride, just wait and see; it's such a fantastic motorcycle...

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. Herm Albright (1876 - 1944)

And be prepared for all the people who will want to come admire your bike, tell you stories about the Triumph they had way back when, and ladies telling you how beautiful she is. I had one hitting up on me over the weekend, when i stopped to eat. If only I was younger and not hitched!!

It has happened to me no matter where I stop. It's a great feeling.
