 coils same as a HARDLEY?

Are the coils stock on a SM, BA or triple the same as some found on another bike such as hardley, honda, yamaha, etc? I see the the aftermarket coils online are sold for Triumph and Harley. Just curious

pretty sure no, because our only option that i know of is nology, and they are different even betrween the bonny family because of firing order

Not Harley for sure. Most, maybe all their standard production coils are a double ended sort that fires the sparkplugs from each end of the secondary winding. I was thinking that the coils from a BMW twin might work, but they are different. At least the older ones used 2 6 volt coils wired in series.

Nuffin' to do with firing order - the coils will fire when they are pulsed. So any coils will do. Probably an ignitor fault. Check them out.

Not any coil will do but any coil with the same specs as ours will do if you change the plug since they do in fact fire when the ignition tells them it's time.

I just replaced mine with a pair made in Germany "PVL", they seem to run just fine. Triumph wanted £132.00 or $264.00 +VAT + Delivery, the ones from PVL were £100.00 delivered.

Back in the days of breaker points, the hot setup for motorcycles was to get universal application store brand car coils from K-Mart. I once saw a magazine article where they setup several popular motorcycle coils with a variable spark gap. They would start pulsing the coil and increase the gap until it stopped sparking. The K-Mart coil sparked at twice the gap of the next best, and didn't stop until the gap was longer than the path across the coil to the Bat terminal. What's more, those suckers were really cheap.

Back in the day a friend of mine had coil troubles with his 500 titan suzuki so eventually fitted two car coils on a wooden board infront of the engine looked terrible reduced top speed by 20 mph but never went wrong

In the days of points and distributors, one could get away with a wide variety of coil specs.
With today's electronic ignitions, I'd be mighty careful about getting the correct spec for an alternate coil.

Check the manufactures listed ohms on their coil and if it's the same as ours you can use it......Angelis

With electronic ignition, you also have to match inductance.
