I am planning a trip up to Beech Mountain, NC on the 17th. Since the wife cannot go I am riding the bike. My Mom stays up on Beech Mountain during the Summer, and during this last July the high temp was 74 degrees, with numerous days never reaching 70 degrees. It will be a nice change from the Florida heat. Looking forward to breakfast at Fred's General Store.....

North Carolina??

I was at a national conference in Michigan a few weeks ago. The North Carolina contigent hosted a "hospitality room" enticing us all to attend their meeting next year. They were serving some alcohol based concoction that began life as simple, ordinary peaches. Hummm, hmmm . Point being, those N. Carolina folk are a sociable lot and said many great and good things about their fine state. Have a fine adventure on your journey .

The above story has an epilogue, better left for another time......

Tom,
I was in that area early in July, and had a great weekend just riding around and exploring the area. Lots of fun roads (221 between Blowing Rock and Linville Falls).

I'd like to meet up and ride, but I'm taking the kids to Williamsburg that weekend. Have a great time in the mountains.

I departed Florida on the 17th around 5:15am and arrived at Beech Mountain at 7:00pm. Almost 14 hours and just short of 700 miles. A pretty good ride with the exception of going through Columbia, SC around 1:00pm. For about a 3 or 4 hour period (before, during and after Columbia, SC) the road temperature had to be close to 120 degrees. I survived but the rear tire looked like it had aged 5,000 miles not 700. I will be calling Machines in Motion tomorrow and see if they can replace both tires and the cush drive. Both tires have just under 8,000 miles. The front tire looks normal, but I like replacing them as a pair. So I won't be doing a lot of riding in the moutains, other than from Beech Mountain to Cumming, GA.

As a rule you have to plan on Columbia being about 10 degrees hotter than anywhere in the surrounding area. I'm glad I haven't been there the past two weeks with the 100 degree temps and 100% humidity.

I called Machines in Motion in Cumming, GA and they didn't have the tires, so I will just head for home. I plan on going through Augusta, GA and if I have any problems then I will contact Augusta Triumph. I figure if I ride only during early morning or late afternoon I should be ok.

I will go to Dr Jones (Ciro) when I get back home, if my back is out of sorts.

It will be hard leaving this wonderfull weather on Beech Mountain. I think the high today was 72 degrees.

Tom:
If it helps, the Triumph dealer in Asheville is located right off of the interstate and the BRP. They may be able to fix you up so you can stay. There is also a close dealership in Charlotte, again right off of the interstate, and in Greenville, SC. There is also one in Eastern Tenn, but I have not been to it.

Good luck.
Mike

I made it home Wednesday night. In 5 days I put over 1400 miles on the bike and I now have a bald rear tire. Both tires have just under 9000 miles. The front tire looks good, but when I get around to it I will replace both.

I did have one small accident on the ride home. I departed Beech Mountain, NC at 0730L with the air temp around 55 degrees. I took US-221 south into Georgia and then US-25 South. At 1300L I stopped in Waynesboro. I found a small café (Good Day Café) on the main drag in town and pulled into the parking lot. I positioned the bike so it would be in the shade since the air temp was around 110 degrees. I really didn’t want to come out with the seat at 140 degrees. I went to put the kick stand down and I basically missed, with the bike going over on its left side. Scraped the left side mirror and Floor Board, and had to readjust the left side hand controls, left mirror and had to readjust the mounts for the shield. After 5.5 hours I guess I was very tired and suffering from heat exhaustion just a little. I stayed in the café for about an hour and had several large Ice Teas. The remainder of the ride was pretty uneventful. I will say that Georgia is in desperate need of some rain. I rode past many miles of fields with the crops looking pretty bad.
