I am also watching this on the news, what a tragedy. My thoughts and prayers are with all those people and I agree, I hope no one here or their loved ones are affected.

Its hard to comprehend how something like that could happen. I lived in MN for 9 years and I've been across that span easily a couple hundred times. That is a main drag thru Minneapolis. My prayers go out to the people there.

Edit: never mind I just went to cnn.com and they have the story. No vid or anything but the story is there.
Edit edit: Thats terrible. I wasn't home all afternoon and this is first I heard.Lets all hope casualties are a minimum.

I just got an email from an old navy buddy in Minneapolis. She's OK, but said there are more than 7 killed as had been reported. She is a sensationalist, so I pray she is being herself.

6pm news. NZ. 7 confirmed dead. Traffic down to 2 lanes from 8 due to re-sealing. 140,000 cars travel that bridge every day. My thoughts are for the people involved with this event.....Mo from downunder

I've seen and read some of those reports too but I think we need to remember the reason this is so shocking is that it is so rare. If it had been a plane or bus crash we would not be shocked at all. Considering all the bridges in this country and the traffic they bear every day I think the safety record is pretty good.
Just yesterday the 14 year old daughter of a business associate of mine died of complications from a tonsillectomy. Both occurrences are tragic and the impact on the victims and their loved ones are terrible, but they also demonstrate the outstanding safety record of both bridges and tonsillectomies simply because we are so shocked and surprised when something tragic happens.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Well said! The danger is that it is so easy to turn a statistical anomaly into a political crusade. Next thing you know politicians of all flavors will be decrying the state of our bridges; whipping up a fear that all across America, bridges will be falling; pointing out that "the opposition" did nothing for bridge safety while they were in power; lobbying for funds for bridge repairs to be done by their favorite companies; and finally using the opportunity to prove how vulnerable we are to terrorists and need to spend more on surveillance.
Mark my words, it will happen

Been watching a whole show on History Channel about bridge collapses. Suprising how many there have actually been. The one that always amazes me is the Tacoma Narrows bridge collapse. The way it undulates. before it goes.

Unfortunately, as our infrastructure ages, we'll probably be seeing more of this.

With the hysteria that is currently ratcheting up and the sheep-like mentality of most people (not here though! ), I seriously doubt this. We (as in the federal government) will throw massive amounts of money at everyone that shouts "I see rust!". I am not making light of the situation. I am the first to commiserate with those affected. I am just stepping back and looking at this from a different level.

I was glad to see the figures for the lost have been so low.
Funny......On MSNBC they did have some Bimbi on there who was blaming...no kiddin Ronald Reagan for this. Poor Ronnie dead and buried and some semi lit bimbi blames a single bridge collapse in one state in these US on him...
LOL.

Talked to my buddy the other day. He's fine, altho he said when he rides his bicycle to work, he rides UNDER that brudge, 3 or 4 times a week! Luckily he took the train that day!
A lot of this country's bridges and roads were built around the same time, so I bet there could be more of this unfortunately. It amazes me how near sighted a lot of traffic studies are. Like the Big Dig in Boston, they are demolishing the old I93! Why not DOUBLE your capacity, rather than just transfer it?!? Oh well...

Double the capacity.........what a novel idea! Oh wait, they say the old one doesn't look good anymore, its an eyesore, just like everything else around here nowadays, "THEY" say it goes and we foot the bill.

It's the goverment. Of course they know what is best for us all. We should never question what they say or what they tell us to think.
