Trivia time it's trivia time...

And since I posted a picture of Sonny Angel, I might as well say that Sonny built a CB750 before Honda did. Sonny built a four cylinder, featherbed framed superbike for Norton. Sort of. Norton baulked at Sonny's proposal but Sonny went ahead and built one. He took a 900cc Hillman four cylinder car engine (I used to have a ' 64 Hillman Minx ) and crammed it into the Norton Featherbed frame. Cycle World did a write up on this back in March 07.

Quote:

The end result looked like a cross between a Norton Atlas and a hotrodded Munich Mammut.

Hey Moe, this reminds me...Have you heard anything lately about the Drysdale V8 from Down Under? The guy was taking two cylinder banks of KZ750s and re-machining the bottom end and making V8s out of them. I thought that was very cool too!

Everyone is still attempting to do teh retro thing. The thing I really like about our bikes (The Speedmaster and America) is they are not retro. They are classic. They are completely individual from anything else ever built but carry the herritage boldly. Hmmm... maybe that is what people are really after. Not so much retro, but herritage, but they do not know how else to obtain that except for recycling old ideas.

I do not see how a "triple" can be air cooled. What with the center not getting much air.

The old Tridents were all air cooled, they sure fried middle pistons though.

Pat, I owned a '71 BSA RocketIII which I bought new(as you know, eventually to become basically the T160 Triumph later in the '70s), and I never had much problem with this cooling issue the 5 years that I owned it. My friend Phil had for many years until very recently a T150, and he never had much trouble in this regard either.

I do remember that the valve clearances on the middle cylinder were to be adjusted very slightly "looser" than the outside cylinder's clearances however, as #2 did run slightly warmer than the others.

The reason all the old A75 Rockets/T150/T160 had those oil-coolers sitting just below the gas tank was to cool #2, and as far as I know they did a pretty good job of doing just that.

These bikes raced with pretty good success back in the late 60s and early 70s, and as I remember even though this was the "theory" about that middle cylinder at the time, I don't recall BSA/Triumph having a particular problem with this on the track during that time either.

But, if you have torn down many of these engines in the past and found this problem to be true, I will defer to your experience.

I remember seeing some pictures of that bike. It was a one off custom if i remember right. Could be wrong though.

The Barber has one of the V8 Mobedelli bikes, i think that is what it was called. Nice looking machine.

I wonder if any one would like to take up the challenge and convert Two Honda CBX 6 cylinder engines into a monster V12 engined bombercycle.

Thanks Moe! Appreciate that.

Mark, I think you mean the Morbidelli V8. I liked the engine concept on that bike, but that fairing was a little "uninspired".

(oh, and that name..."MORBID-elli" I believe is right up there with the old british dirt motorcycle marque named "Greeves" on the list of unfortunate nomenclature, wouldn't ya say?!)

Thank Ed. He's the one that asked for pics although he has some too. That is really being lazy there roadie. Unless you were at work at the time and your pics were at home...

Dwight, if ever you or anyone is in the Birmingham AL area the Barber museum is a must see.

Yes, I will second that. I have been there on a few occassions now, went to the old museum in downtown Birmingham and then to the new facility. The new museum with the race track next to it is simply stunning.

I never get bored of going there. Every time they seem to have different bikes on show. They must have hundreds of bikes tucked away waiting to be exhibited.

They also have a pretty impressive collection of Lotus racing cars including a couple of F1 cars.

Fabulous pictures Moe.

Question though. It says 1600cc. But the original engines that make up these V8 were 900cc. When i went to school, 900 + 900 did not make 1600.

Hmm, a mystery

Can you believe it Moe? This old Kawa mechanic didn't get single picture of the Double Z-1 V8 beast; guess I was too smitten with the Speed Twins and Vincents (drool).

At the risk of "over analyizing" this I suspect the displacement was lowered when all of the piston rods were connected to the new crank and the stroke length changed.

These legendary machines killed what was left of the British bike industry. Thankfully now we have a fantastic new range of Triumphs now bring on the retro Honda.

hey moe, that's a great shot!

I didn't know the sandcast came in blue during the ko year. Maybe that's a '70 with left over side panels.
either way, that is a beautifull machine.

origional seat, fenders, exhaust and rear tire. That is some of the first things people used to change out back then.

awesome picture!!!!

Mine was a '73....bryer brown in color.

True enough, overhead cams blew away push rods. Doesn't that rear tire look just a wee bit flat?

It was a GT 750, and a very nice bike indeed, my brother had the GT380 in the 70s well for a few months and then wrote it off. Hit a car which pulled out on him.

All this talk about CB750's made me think about it and guess what will be parked next to my America in a few days time.

1996 CB Seven Fifty F2, very low miles for year just under 17,000

Saw a picture of the new Honda today in MCN, it looks pretty much the same as the pic above but with FI and a new air cooled engine, as well upgraded brakes and shocks. Looks pretty good.

I think the "retro" comes from the fact that it is a four cyclinder, aircooled motor in a tubular cradel frame with twin shocks on the back and regular front forks.

If it was non retro, it would have had single shock rear suspension, upside down forks, it would have been water cooled and the engine would have been either a stressed member of the chassis or it would be hanging from a twin spar frame or a spine frame.

I pass this a a retro, Modern, but retor. I like it.

But as i have said many times, i am bias. I have always had a thing for UJMs.

The bike birchr designates as old isn't the bike I think of when I think of the CB750 of old. The one I think of is the mid 70s version. Around 74 or 75 I think but not sure since I know little about rice.

I must agree, when I thought of the old CB750 I was thinking along the lines of the 70s models. I do like the new one though, if it had been the old 70s model, I think it would of sold a lot more.

I agree, I think it would have sold more here in the US if it was like the 70s model too. I think they did a good job on the new one as well.
